CIA necessary, but needs oversight

Making the police into international spy organizations is just plain wrong. There needs to be oversight over any power, or they just take what they want and then government grows beyond the people's ability to support it.

Word search, "The United Fruit Company". The CIA in South America, allegedly tortured and killed large land owners and food processing plant owners so corporations could take over. Leaders of countries were covertly overthrown. Mouthy workers who didn't want to be slaves were tortured then assassinated.

Police, the CIA, FBI, the TSA, and Homeland Security White Males may feel they can spy on, and then force sex on any women they target. They have that power. Anyone's property or car is not theirs. Anything can be taken from anyone now. That is the power of the NDAA. If you don't like it, your citizenship can be revoked, you can be kidnapped, tortured, and then murdered, you merely have to have your name placed on an enemies list, no reason.

I was put in prison for being a landlord, home owner, taxpayer, contractor, raising a family. Police used prostitutes, vandals, thieves, a psychopath, police informant, drug dealers and other vermin to terrorize me then railroad me to prison pre-9/11. My daughter and most of my family won't speak to me since prison. This is your country too. And you may be next.

I would drop everything and campaign for Ron Paul all of my waking hours, 7 days a week until the election if I could also keep fed, keep warm, and keep gas in my modest ride.

I hate to put faith in any politician. So many had faith in Obama and he lied to them all and let them down. I don't see Ron Paul doing that.

We need to end these wars and stop the rights grabbing and thuggery which is the new US Government. We need to change the clock back before 9/11 legislatively. I did. I got toasted.

It has been almost 10 years since my only daughter has talked to me. I may never see my grandchildren because a police informant jumped me in my driveway, tried to do me with a knife, and I got him with pepper spray. I got a year in prison for this offense, the felon attacker who threatened my life, stalked and terrorized me, telling my tenants he'd kill me when he caught up to me, was considered my victim in court.

When Free Speech and journalism gets more of the law enforcement's attention, you know things are getting worse. When special officers can rape women, grope people, and do whatever evil they care to, to children, you know a nation is in dire straits. Since when is torture okay anywhere. Isn't the US supposed to be the human rights protector, not abuser? No US military person can now say they are protecting American's Rights when they have now been sourced to abuse them and militarily occupy the US as a war zone. It is time for even the slowest witted Americans to wake up, we're all needed for this one.

Leahy Drops Domain Name Terms Of Internet Piracy Bill

(Host) Senator Patrick Leahy is the sponsor of a controversial bill that aims to prevent Internet piracy - the problem of rogue websites distributing copyrighted data that they don't own.

Critics of the bill include technology entrepreneurs, services like YouTube and free-speech advocates who say the law would stifle legal online activity. Supporters say the bill goes after illegal websites and protects the intellectual property of content creators.

Speaking Thursday on VPR's Vermont Edition, Leahy stated he was willing to compromise on one aspect of the so-called Protect IP Act. He said he's going to drop a provision that would require service providers to block or redirect users from accessing illegal sites.

(Leahy) "I'm going to set aside these Domain Name provisions. That we'll hold back on, because I've listened to some of the concerns on those. I think there [are] easy answers to it, but let's set it aside, let's spend a year or so studying that part."

(Host) That provision is controversial because it would force Internet Service Providers to manipulate the structure that underpins Internet naming protocols.

The Protect IP Act still faces a contentious closure debate later this month in the US Senate.

I listened to Leahy on VPR yesterday. A caller in blasted Leahy for signing the NDAA, military detention bill saying there would be widespread protests. I agree with the caller in. Leahy should be ashamed of himself. Maybe residents will go door to door to see that Vermont US Senator Patrick Leahy is removed for violating his oath of office.

I want to thank you for your vote of conscience on the NDAA. There is another US Senator in another state that is so violating the US Constitution with his words and actions, and his oath of office, I wish to ask you what can be done to remove him.

Is a petition the way? Do I need to lobby State Government in that State?

Montana Voters Move To Recall Senators Over Votes Allowing Indefinite Detention of Citizens

We have been discussing the disconnect between citizens who have repeatedly opposed continued rollbacks of civil liberties and the Democratic and Republican leadership pushing for such rollbacks, including the recent provision allowing indefinite detention of citizens under the National Defense Authorization Act of 2011 (NDAA). Now Montana citizens have decided to try another approach given the non-responsive attitude of our leaders — they are moving to remove their two Senators from office over their votes in favor of indefinite detention powers.

Montana is one of nine states with recall laws. The other states are Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, Michigan, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, and Wisconsin. Eighteen states have recall laws, but most do not apply to federal officers.

Montana Code 2-16-603, on the grounds of physical or mental lack of fitness, incompetence, violation of oath of office, official misconduct, or conviction of certain felony offenses.

Presumably, they are arguing that voting for an unconstitutional measure that allows for indefinite detention of citizens constitutes both a violation of the oath of office and incompetence. Usually official misconduct does not include policy differences, though voting for potentially authoritarian powers would not be viewed as good conduct in a free nation.

The move by the Montana votes shows something that I found in doing speeches around the country: there is no difference in red and blue states in citizens (1) fed up with our current two-party monopoly and dysfunctional politics and (2) opposed to the loss of civil liberties in this country. This should be the time when civil liberties groups are pushing aggressively, but many are divided in their willingness to oppose Obama — a problem that has existed since the early days of his Administration when he tacked hard to the right on national security laws. These politicians, including Obama, have long made the cynical calculation that civil libertarians have no where to go politically and that votes continue to be motivated by party allegiance and the appeal of personalities. These Montana voters are trying to show that they are wrong.

Scumbag Lieberman being a US Senator in Connecticut says that state should be removed from the union. Lieberman then can expatriate any citizen out of the the Republik of Korruptikut who he wants. Joe Lieberman is a traitor, he is the worst excuse for someone who claims to be an American, ever, and he should be expatriated out of a free United States.

If Lieberman is ever convicted of being a spy, a traitor, or a war criminal committing despicable acts against humanity, I would volunteer my services in helping carry out his sentence. I contacted Lieberman's office about police brutality and public corruption. It seems that is something that he is out to protect and serve. My sister had the displeasure, in my opinion, of having to fly with him first class. Lieberman is the scum of the earth. He should not be making laws for any law abiding, tax paying, good Americans. That scumbag should rot in prison, or worse. Let's see that we are represented for our taxation, not sodomized for the privilege of paying taxes.

What do most Americans now do best.? The answer would be "Nothing". So, the best protest is if we all did nothing at the same time.

I'm upset with my US Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy for having voted for the NDAA. I don't like that Bernie Sanders is a Socialist, but at least he voted against it and is a critic of the international bankers and corporate owners of the US Government. I also say that I would vote for Dennis Kucinich, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn, Amy Goodman, Naomi White, you, or even Ron Paul, for President. But, I don't think that is enough.

I would like to see Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, and maybe Satan himself, US Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman removed, legally from office. I think a clear message to elected officials is that we the people of had it, is to remove the bums before they finish their terms. That includes the lying streetwalker whose real label begins with a "wh", Barack Obama.

I plan on writing Bernie Sanders and Vermont State Officials about the process of removing Leahy and Lieberman, and then seeing if others will do what some of citizens in Montana propose, getting rid of bums who don't represent us.

Decades Later, A Cold War Secret Is Revealed

For more than a decade they toiled in the strange, boxy-looking building on the hill above the municipal airport, the building with no windows (except in the cafeteria), the building filled with secrets.

They wore protective white jumpsuits, and had to walk through air-shower chambers before entering the sanitized "clean room" where the equipment was stored.

They spoke in code.

Few knew the true identity of "the customer" they met in a smoke-filled, wood-paneled conference room where the phone lines were scrambled. When they traveled, they sometimes used false names.

At one point in the 1970s there were more than 1,000 people in the Danbury area working on "The Secret." And although they worked long hours under intense deadlines, sometimes missing family holidays and anniversaries, they could tell no one — not even their wives and children — what they did.

They were engineers, scientists, draftsmen and inventors — "real cloak-and-dagger guys," says Fred Marra, 78, with a hearty laugh.

He is sitting in the food court at the Danbury Fair mall, where a group of retired co-workers from the former Perkin-Elmer Corp. gather for a weekly coffee. Gray-haired now and hard of hearing, they have been meeting here for 18 years. They while away a few hours nattering about golf and politics, ailments and grandchildren. But until recently, they were forbidden to speak about the greatest achievement of their professional lives.

"Ah, Hexagon," Ed Newton says, gleefully exhaling the word that stills feels almost treasonous to utter in public.

It was dubbed "Big Bird" and it was considered the most successful space spy satellite program of the Cold War era. From 1971 to 1986 a total of 20 satellites were launched, each containing 60 miles of film and sophisticated cameras that orbited the Earth snapping vast, panoramic photographs of the Soviet Union, China and other potential foes. The film was shot back through the Earth's atmosphere in buckets that parachuted over the Pacific Ocean, where C-130 Air Force planes snagged them with grappling hooks.

The scale, ambition and sheer ingenuity of Hexagon KH-9 was breathtaking. The fact that 19 out of 20 launches were successful (the final mission blew up because the booster rockets failed) is astonishing.

So, too, is the human tale of the 45-year-old secret that many took to their graves.

Hexagon was declassified in September. Finally Marra, Newton and others can tell the world what they worked on all those years at "the office."

"My name is Al Gayhart and I built spy satellites for a living," announced the 64-year-old retired engineer to the stunned bartender in his local tavern as soon as he learned of the declassification. He proudly repeats the line any chance he gets.

"It was intensely demanding, thrilling and the greatest experience of my life," says Gayhart, who was hired straight from college and was one of the youngest members of the Hexagon "brotherhood".

He describes the white-hot excitement as teams pored over hand-drawings and worked on endless technical problems, using "slide-rules and advanced degrees" (there were no computers), knowing they were part of such a complicated space project. The intensity would increase as launch deadlines loomed and on the days when "the customer" — the CIA and later the Air Force — came for briefings. On at least one occasion, former President George H.W. Bush, who was then CIA director, flew into Danbury for a tour of the plant.

Though other companies were part of the project — Eastman Kodak made the film and Lockheed Corp. built the satellites — the cameras and optics systems were all made at Perkin-Elmer, then the biggest employer in Danbury.

"There were many days we arrived in the dark and left in the dark," says retired engineer Paul Brickmeier, 70.

He recalls the very first briefing on Hexagon after Perkin-Elmer was awarded the top secret contract in 1966. Looking around the room at his 30 or so colleagues, Brickmeier thought, "How on earth is this going to be possible?"

One thing that made it possible was a hiring frenzy that attracted the attention of top engineers from around the Northeast. Perkin-Elmer also commissioned a new 270,000-square-foot building for Hexagon — the boxy one on the hill.

Waiting for clearance was a surreal experience as family members, neighbors and former employers were grilled by the FBI, and potential hires were questioned about everything from their gambling habits to their sexuality.

"They wanted to make sure we couldn't be bribed," Marra says.

Clearance could take up to a year. During that time, employees worked on relatively minor tasks in a building dubbed "the mushroom tank" — so named because everyone was in the dark about what they had actually been hired for.

Joseph Prusak, 76, spent six months in the tank. When he was finally briefed on Hexagon, Prusak, who had worked as an engineer on earlier civil space projects, wondered if he had made the biggest mistake of his life.

I thought they were crazy," he says. "They envisaged a satellite that was 60-foot long and 30,000 pounds and supplying film at speeds of 200 inches per second. The precision and complexity blew my mind."

Several years later, after numerous successful launches, he was shown what Hexagon was capable of — an image of his own house in suburban Fairfield.

"This was light years before Google Earth," Prusak said. "And we could clearly see the pool in my backyard."

There had been earlier space spy satellites — Corona and Gambit. But neither had the resolution or sophistication of Hexagon, which took close-range pictures of Soviet missiles, submarine pens and air bases, even entire battalions on war exercises.

According to the National Reconnaissance Office, a single Hexagon frame covered a ground distance of 370 nautical miles, about the distance from Washington to Cincinnati. Early Hexagons averaged 124 days in space, but as the satellites became more sophisticated, later missions lasted twice as long.

"At the height of the Cold War, our ability to receive this kind of technical intelligence was incredible," says space historian Dwayne Day. "We needed to know what they were doing and where they were doing it, and in particular if they were preparing to invade Western Europe. Hexagon created a tremendous amount of stability because it meant American decision-makers were not operating in the dark."

Among other successes, Hexagon is credited with providing crucial information for the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1970s.

From the outset, secrecy was a huge concern, especially in Danbury, where the intense activity of a relatively small company that had just been awarded a massive contract (the amount was not declassified) made it obvious that something big was going on. Inside the plant, it was impossible to disguise the gigantic vacuum thermal chamber where cameras were tested in extreme conditions that simulated space. There was also a "shake, rattle and roll room" to simulate conditions during launch.

"The question became, how do you hide an elephant?" a National Reconnaissance Office report stated at the time. It decided on a simple response: "What elephant?" Employees were told to ignore any questions from the media, and never confirm the slightest detail about what they worked on.

But it was impossible to conceal the launches at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, and aviation magazines made several references to "Big Bird." In 1975, a "60 Minutes" television piece on space reconnaissance described an "Alice in Wonderland" world, where American and Soviet intelligence officials knew of each other's "eyes in the sky" — and other nations did, too — but no one confirmed the programs or spoke about them publicly.

For employees at Perkin-Elmer, the vow of secrecy was considered a mark of honor.

"We were like the guys who worked on the first atom bomb," said Oscar Berendsohn, 87, who helped design the optics system. "It was more than a sworn oath. We had been entrusted with the security of the country. What greater trust is there?"

Even wives — who couldn't contact their husbands or know of their whereabouts when they were traveling — for the most part accepted the secrecy. They knew the jobs were highly classified. They knew not to ask questions.

"We were born into the World War II generation," says Linda Bronico, whose husband, Al, told her only that he was building test consoles and cables. "We all knew the slogan 'loose lips sink ships.'"

And Perkin-Elmer was considered a prized place to work, with good salaries and benefits, golf and softball leagues, lavish summer picnics (the company would hire an entire amusement park for employees and their families) and dazzling children's Christmas parties.

"We loved it," Marra says. "It was our life."

For Marra and his former co-workers, sharing that life and their long-held secret has unleashed a jumble of emotions, from pride to nostalgia to relief — and in some cases, grief.

The city's mayor, Mark Boughton, only discovered that his father had worked on Hexagon when he was invited to speak at an October reunion ceremony on the grounds of the former plant. His father, Donald Boughton, also a former mayor, was too ill to attend and died a few days later.

Boughton said that for years he and his siblings would pester his father — a draftsman — about what he did. Eventually they realized that the topic was off limits.

"Learning about Hexagon makes me view him completely differently," Boughton says. "He was more than just my Dad with the hair-trigger temper and passionate opinions about everything. He was a Cold War warrior doing something incredibly important for our nation."

For Betty Osterweis the ceremony was bittersweet, too. Not only did she learn about the mystery of her late husband's professional life, but also she learned about his final moments.

"All these years," she said, "I had wondered what exactly had happened" on that terrible day in 1987 when she received a phone call saying her 53-year-old husband, Henry Osterweis, a contract negotiator, had suffered a heart attack on the job. At the reunion she met former co-workers who could offer some comfort that the end had been quick.

Standing in the grounds of her late husband's workplace, listening to the tributes, her son and daughter and grandchildren by her side, Osterweis was overwhelmed by the enormity of it all — the sacrifice, the secrecy, the pride.

"To know that this was more than just a company selling widgets … that he was negotiating contracts for our country's freedom and security," she said.

"What a secret. And what a legacy."

I recently watched "Apocalypse Now" again. The insanity of secret missions and of the war itself is presented. Would any of us in a majority voted for a protracted war in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Iraq may still have weapons of Mass Destruction not used in the war against Iran sold to them by the US was not a real excuse to invade. Afghanistan harbored CIA operative Osama bin Laden who was probably too ill, and to small an entity, to pull off 9/11, allegedly for the FBI who failed the first time in 1993, the CIA, Mossad, and the offshore corporate and bankster owners of the US Government. Trillions have been stolen and our national sovereignty is in question.

My tax dollars were used to kill people, for invading sovereign nations, creating a police state, and in terrorizing and abusing me into a non-taxpayer. The enemy of the people is international corporate organized crime.

My frustration is only compounded by Microsoft trying to constantly update itself, constantly trying to automatically shut down the computer when I am trying to do something. Microsoft now owns Skype, and those bastards are doing the very same thing with Skype. The constant denial of service with the constant bullshit updates that I didn't ask for, and don't want! Judges can be malicious, knowingly cause harm, break laws, and be comfortable that they will never suffer financially, nor criminally, for their evil deeds. One judge may have decided whether all of a state's Habeas Corpus petitions could be filed, and then decided, himself, on their cases. The State of Connecticut is already well known for its police brutality and judicial misconduct. Maybe 70%, on average, of wealth is lost by couples in family courts.

Why I am angry with US Government, policing, courts, and offshore corporate owners/banksters ripping everyone off as posted as a comment in this Rob Kall Opednews.com article:

This is a sensitive subject for me. I used to own 3 rental properties and had a contracting business built over 2 decades and had family, my own home, credit, retirement, health insurance, a good reputation, no criminal record, friends, and traveled internationally. A police informant, also a mugger and a felon, threatened my life for 2 weeks, stalked me, and then attacked me on my Stafford Springs, Connecticut property telling me he'd cut my penis off if I didn't hand over my wallet. I pepper sprayed him.

Self-defense isn't legal in Connecticut. The mugger, a felon, was giving immunity for the felonies he committed stalking me, threatening my life, assaulting me, and trying to rob me. I got a year in prison and had to pay the mugger restitution. I lost everything. I tried to contact family before, and during Thanksgiving, and heard from no one. My daughter disowned me after I went to prison. I don't hear "Daddy" or "I love you" anymore.

So, the officers who actually committed a crime using pepper spray should be punished.

I bought rental properties and fixed them up from a boarded up condition over 10 years ago. I had built up a contracting business over 2 decades. I owned a home, paid taxes, was raising a family and contributed to society. I consumed goods with my large income. Police in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, were so alarmed with my activities that they used police informants, prostitutes, vandals, heroin and crack cocaine dealers, and other criminals parasites to terrorize me and set me up for false arrest and to be held as a political prisoner.

If unofficial policy is to use non-productive citizens to take out productive citizens contributing to the system, do the math. It has to fail. This is the system, the American Police State system in a nutshell.

The most productive citizens are being taught to hate the American Government by being aware of the truth, considering living outside the prison camp, America. So, I'm OWS on the street too, too pissed off to fail.

I was listening to an NPR broadcast on VPR, Vermont Public Radio, about a week ago. The subject was Android phones. The GPS location feature is always on. The phone has an embedded video camera and microphone. There was even talk of OnStar being abused by officials, and others, for tracking, domestic spying, and for eavesdropping on private conversations you might be having inside your vehicle. If Android phones all bunching up, still, can be used to monitor real time traffic patterns, then re-route drivers with smart phones around the jam, the technology has off the charts beneficial, and probably even more malignant, applications. Be aware.

Everyone who I know who has made a police misconduct complaint, made a judicial misconduct complaint, or has talked to elected officials about police brutality, court reform, and/or has proposed Civilian Oversight of Police, has met with bad luck. The bad luck occurred at the hands of police informants being used to police to terrorize, beat up, set up, and even being paid cash by police to kill targets. Getting in the way of police colluding with heroin and cocaine dealers, prostitutes, and other criminals can put the honest, taxpaying, home owning, family raising citizen on a police target list.

OWS has the potential to become a worldwide revolution to throw off the chains put on us by our offshore corporate owners and banksters who puppeteer the US Military and US Government. Police work for them, not for us. Courts are to protect government policy, government officials, run interference for officials involved in public corruption, for corporate abuse of the public, and for revenue collection, property confiscation, and to further destroy the family to weaken the opposition. The self-employed, independent minds, small and medium business, the small farmer, the independent bloggers and journalists, are all enemies of our corporate owners.

The Android type phones are coming from them, our corporate owners as best described by George Carlin. George Carlin describes corporations and their criminal friends on Wall St. in video link.

Being a divorced father meeting with others to propose court reform and to prevent police from telling us we weren't allowed at school functions, and we didn't want police interfering with our current romantic relationships, treating us like we are criminals just for being non-custodial parents. We were followed around, threatened, set up, and falsely arrested. Some of us got prison based on false arrests, false statements, perjury of officers, and going through the rigged court system. Knowing what we say, who we say it to, and where we are 24/7, makes it easy for police to use their police informants most effectively.

The now world wide Occupy Wall St. Movement probably has put the KGB-like American policing system in overdrive.

If I can be followed around by police officers in 2 cruisers 24/7, threatened with being murdered by police, mocked by police with the exact text of private emails and words I used in private phone calls, we are paying to be spied on, terrorized, enslaved, ripped off, imprisoned, and even to be murdered by the state. I was told I was a target for property and business loss, loss of my daughter, and prison because I was a mouthy landlord/contractor. So, if 5 or 6 figures of your tax dollars can be used to ruin one person and then pay for him, or her, to rot in prison because of their chosen profession, unlimited tax dollars can be used to squash, subvert, and ruin the OWS movement. As the movement is a greater threat to their organized criminal empire, more than I ever was, or can be.

The Tea Party Movement lost all sorts of steam when it was hijacked by nutcases like Sarah Palin, and the organized criminals in the Republican Party. Democrats have similar criminals in their party. They act for offshore corporate owners and banksters, not you.

Less planning should be done on the computer. Less planning should be done over phone lines or over the cell phone radio. Meetings should be electronics free. All participants should be vetted. Giving up your cell phone should be considered if you are a target of officials for what you own, what you say, or if one of them wants to put you out of the picture to try to take possession of your significant other.

I haven't been pulled over randomly by police, threatened with arrest, having done nothing, where the officer says he has to call the Connecticut State Police, where I tell officers that I am just trying to survive, work and am going back to Vermont. I don't know if Massachusetts State Police have plate scanners or used GPS tracking to target users of cell phones. But borrowing vehicles to go to political events and not caring a cell phone has really reduced my daily stress level.

I am a target on the Connecticut State Police Secret Enemies Arrest on Sight List for having complained about this.

The PBS Documentary about the 1700 secret police/military bases inside America should alarm all citizens.

I've contacted Vermont US Senators Bernie Sanders and Patrick Leahy, this is their answer. So, if you are being spied on, terrorized by police, or falsely arrested and imprisoned for testing the validity of the First Amendment, elected officials don't seem to care. They are unwilling to interfere with other branches of government.

A Vermont State Police Officer beat on my apartment door in Putney, Vermont. He beat on it, and beat on it, looking like he was very angry. He made me look like a criminal to my neighbors and that I was a dirtbag being sought on criminal charges. I called Troop D, Vermont State Police, and asked if I was wanted for anything, or if they had questions for me. I got a "no" several times. A New Hampshire State Police Officer called my father in another state and asked him what my girlfriend's name was, where she lived, what she drove, license plate numbers, and a description of her car and of her, if he knew it, and to get it if he didn't. I contacted the officer in New Hampshire and I, or anyone may, or may not be romantically involved with, was not a target of any criminal investigation for an arrest.

Police aren't for protecting and serving you. They are for protecting and serving the state at your taxpayer expense. If retaliating against you, terrorizing you for state interests/purposes is their job, they do it. Don't call an armed revenue collector for anything, I don't.

Having given up my cell phone 2 years ago means police aren't showing up when I am out enjoying myself or going home to bed after a long day of work.

[This] is what police use of informants looks like.

If I can't tell my own father if I am dating, who I am dating, where I work, or even the state I live in, do you think you should be giving up all that information willingly if you are likewise upset with our current goon government, policing, and courts? Be aware my friend.

Palin and Obama are Sell Outs

I placed the below as a comment to this [Opednews.com piece] on Sarah Palin's possible run for US President on the Tea Party ticket.

America would have got F'd whether, or not Obama got in. McCain/Palin would have done the same thing. Where is change, where is choice, where is representation for our taxation? Palin and Obama are sell outs. I consider them both criminals.

If Sean Penn, Alec Baldwin, Amy Goodman, Matt Damon, or another high profile politically active actor or news person ran, I would support that. They'd have a chance to win on an independent ticket if they also did something they might not want to, support the 2nd Amendment. There is no 1st if it isn't backed up with the 2nd. I don't pack myself, and won't even carry a box cutter, I know police and judicial misconduct is so bad in the US, I take serious the death threats I received from Connecticut State Police for having wrote letters to the editor printed in newspapers and for proposing court reform and Civilian Oversight of Police to elected officials. If the NYC PD have operatives and operations going on worldwide, poilce in the US are now the equivalent of the CIA, not okay in a supposed free country.

Let's take back our country. Let's not vote for offshore corporate banksters by voting in a Democrat or Republic to any office, even garbage collector if that is on the ballot. I'm kidding on that one. But, vote all the incumbent bums out, all of them with the exception of Dennis Kucinich and just a few others. I would be more supportive of Bernie Sanders of Vermont if he was more responsive to independent news sources who want to interview him and to constituents who just want a response not just a canned general response.

Before 9/11 police in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, asked me to become a police informant to rat out, make false statements against other landlords, home and small business owners. Police seemed to be crime managers and armed revenue collectors. Drugs would be sold, police supplied tax dollars for buys of marijuana, crack cocaine, and heroin. Addicts got to keep half of buy money and/or half the drugs, what kind of crap law enforcement is that?

I refused to aid organized crime, the police. I then wrote letters to the editor printed in newspapers, proposed laws to elected officials to deal with youth to help them go good, with police being more user friendly for small business and citizens, and for courts to be accessible, user friendly, not expensive and rigged. Police told me that I was interfering with police, a felony if I interfered with drug dealing, crime, and prostitution. I was also told I was kicked out of Connecticut and would be arrested and go to prison if I proposed legislation that interfered with the revenue collection system of police, the courts, and for lawyers? What!!!???

My letters to Obama, and first Bush, tell the story. Contacting elected officials, respectfully, asking about issues can lead to prison. This is the best documentary [part 1] [part 2] I've found connecting the CIA and US Military Brass to drug dealing and organized crime. State Police are like KGB running CIA type black bag operations. My Opednews.com piece on the subject. A crack cocaine user who prefers sex with 6 to 8 year olds was awarded my property for harassing and assaulting me and sexually harassing my then 14 year old daughter. I spent two decades building a contracting business and then obtaining investment properties. I then spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and 5 years fixing up boarded up investment properties. Since, I wasn't connected police used prostitutes, drug dealers, and vandals to set me up for prison. I was against the cop run crime ring and drug dealing operation in Stafford Springs, Connecticut.

I was raising a family. Police were out to cause my divorce, estrangement from my daughter/family, and for me to lose my retirement, credit, home, and security. I was told before I was retaliated against that I was not allowed to write letters to the editor nor talk to elected officials about my concerns by police. I was threatened with arrest and prison for starting a Crime Watch and talking to elected officials. I was railroaded to prison.

I have zero faith in the organized crime that is an excuse for government. [my story and pics]

I asked all the divorced fathers, those who are members of a judicial reform network, and all my carpentry, painter, journalist, blogger, and other friends not to vote for Simmons, or to not vote. I am in Connecticut with others organizing, deciding who is for us, who is against us to be out in numbers at the polls.

My number one concern is my own case.

I spent hundreds of thousands of dollars acquiring, and then fixing up boarded up rental properties. I was a co-founder of the now defunct Stafford Springs Crime Watch. I was told by police officers that I wasn't allowed to speak at Crime Watch Meeting and was not allowed to propose legislation to help youth go good, not bad. I was told I would interfere with the police, court, and lawyer revenue collection system with my proposed legislation and that I would lose my property, contracting business built over 20 years, my daughter, go to prison and then be kicked out of Connecticut if I talked to state and federal elected officials. I had 2 druggie felon police informants threatening my life, harassing my then 14 year old daughter, even sexually, and I knew that if either was able to attack me on my Somers or Stafford property, only I would be arrested and could spend the rest of my life in prison for being attacked and beaten up on my own property. I would run from my vehicle to my back door, until I wasn't fast enough one day. I was attacked, only I was arrested, and I received a year in prison for resisting being beaten up by a felon who left death threats on my voicemail, stalked me, and would beat on my door yelling he was going to kill me waking my neighbors and tenants. I got a year in prison with no previous record for pepper spraying the knife wielding felon. I am estranged from my daughter, most of my family, can't own a home, and am barred from most jobs due to bogus criminal record.

I would like to become anonymous, changing my name, taking all of my blogs/videos down. I request help in expunging my bogus criminal record. Will you, or your people help, and/or write a letter in my behalf to the Governor? I need my record expunged to live. I would also like compensation for my nightmare, pennies on the dollar if possible. My opinions on organizing to protest on Wall St., NYC

I watched a video of the protest on Wall St., [within this Opednews.com article] written by Danny Schechter. There is a glimpse of a young blond woman topless about 2 minutes, 14 seconds in. I think to get better results, the protest should not look anything like a hippy pot smoking protest. What probably concerns authorities is that the protest on Wall St. in New York City could spark nationwide, or even global, protest against the offshore banks and corporations who have their backs scratched by the heads of US Government, the US Military, CIA, etc. More people who are fed up should occupy Wall St., and should even consider standing outside the Capitol Buildings in their own States staging similar protests. My Comment to Mr. Schechter's article:

I gave up my use of cell phones about 2 years ago. Having police show up where I am politically active, ready for me, has been reduced. Emailing and talking on a cell phone about your plans is dangerous if you are part of the group that has, or is trying to connect the dots. Posting times, strategies, and meet up locations only makes it easier for the goon squads.

Having a GPS device on you, even off, might be an open mike or can lead police or their informants right to you. I was security on a film. We used police like radios with ear pieces. Getting equipment, a cup of coffee, others to help is instantaneously. When I'd go to the Hartford Capitol in Connecticut to speak at a public hearing, I'd face Connecticut State Troopers who would follow me around, give me menacing looks, and would follow me out to my vehicle, flashing their light bars just to scare me. I was also detained, to delay me from being able to attend public hearings.

The police and their informants get together and assemble target lists. They look for key people and then they spring traps or concoct to be able to arrest targets. Using like radios, and planning for meetings and strategy must be done offline, not posted on the internet, and not talked about over cell phones. If the Connecticut State Police were so infuriated with my proposing Civilian Oversight of Police to elected officials and for what I wrote in newspapers to enforce a "No Dating Policy" on me, mocking me on what I said on the telephone and in emails, don't expect any privacy of communication if you protest.

White Cops, Black Women, Simulated Public Sex

The Serpico NYPD corruption, narcotics, and bribery case says a lot about how policing really works. It is about protecting government interests, revenue collecting, and scams officers are in involved in. It is who you know.

In Stafford Springs, Connecticut, officers threatened and ran a man out of downtown who owned a pizza parlor. He had parents from Pakistan. The pizza owner had darker skin. Officers thought they had first dibs on White single women and ran him out of town for having them in the apartment about the pizza parlor.

I wrote to Bush 9-15-01 about being under siege in my rental properties. Officers told me I was going to prison if I didn't shut up and leave the state. Officers seemed to protect the prostitution, heroin, and cocaine trades while going after non-connected property and business owners. I was attacked on my property 10-11-01 by a police informant. I got a year in prison for ending the attack with pepper spray.

So, officers acting more like mafia, not law enforcement is still disturbing to me. Officers run the town more than any elected officials. Civilian Oversight of Police is needed. They will not have honor or good behavior until police no longer police themselves.

Surviving Victim Testifies in Connecticut Home Invasion Trial: Dr. William Petit Jr. testified today in the triple murder case against Joshua Komisarjevsky, accused of killing Petit's wife and two daughters in a brutal 2007 home invasion. Petit also testified during the trial of Steven Hayes, who was convicted of 16 counts and sentenced to death last year for the crimes. One of Komisarjevsky's defense attorneys conceded yesterday during his opening statement that his client planned the break-in, targeted the Petit home, and beat Petit with a baseball bat after entering the home, but claimed "he never intended to kill anyone." The Cheshire Home invasion in Connecticut was a sad event. Connecticut prisons were inhumane and overcrowded when I was sentenced to a year in prison for resisting being mugged on my own rental properties ending the knife wielder's attack of me after he jumped me in my dark driveway. Instead of the Connecticut State Police and those who rig courts in Connecticut going after the real, dangerous criminals who kill, rape, rob, sodomize, and are parasites on humanity, authorities are bent on ruining the self-employed, small business, breaking up families for profit, and running as many people with money and assets through the system, even to prison, as possible. Good people like Dr. Petit, and his family, need not have suffered if our tax dollars were used to fight crime, to protect and serve, and as they should be intended. Police are out covering up their crimes, drug dealing, rapes, robberies, prostitution and other scams. This "Homeland Security" should not be tolerated. Criminals who posed a threat to society were not being watched, those exercising free speech and who redress grievances to elected officials are. Connecticut Public Safety Committee Liaison decides law, not representatives

I was informed by Stafford Springs, Connecticut, Representative John D. Mordasky's aid, Rosemarie, that I was going to be severely retaliated against for my having proposed Civilian Oversight of Police back in 2001. She told me that Steven Spellman, legislative liaison for Connecticut Public Safety.

Senator Tony Guglielmo, Congressman Rob Simmons, and others were also aware I was going to be railroaded to prison, in my opinion.

So, Steven Spellman, was key in my losing my home, contracting business, daughter, being falsely arrested, and railroaded to prison. Should police decide whether or not elected officials can represent us for our taxation?

Congress Sees Middle East Through AIPAC-Colored Glasses

During August recess this year, 81 members of Congress went on a junket to Israel funded by the Israel lobby group AIPAC (well, funded by the American Israel Education Fund, but they are really one and the same ) to "learn first-hand about one of our closest friends and allies." While the representatives insist they got a balanced view, their itinerary belies that claim: 95% of their time was spent hearing the Israeli government point of view, with only one token meeting with Palestinian reps.

CODEPINK has filed a complaint with the Congressional Ethics Committee stating that these trips -- and the upcoming ones scheduled for December -- violate the Congressional prohibition on traveling with a lobby group. We feel these Potemkin voyages are part of AIPAC's grand plan to control and monopolize Congress, which is not just unethical, but dangerous. Their bias reinforces a disastrous U.S. policy of unconditional support for Israel that obstructs peace and runs counter to our national interests.

At a recent Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, entitled "Promoting Peace? Reexamining US Aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA)," we got a glimpse of what happens when Congress views the Middle East through AIPAC-colored glasses. Here are a few of examples of their tunnel vision:

* Asking the wrong questions: Congress is intent on looking into the $600 million a year U.S. taxpayers give to the Palestinian Authority, especially at a time, as a few members brought up, of economic hardship in the United States. But they would not dare hold a hearing about the more important issue: the $3 billion a year we are giving to the Israeli government -- which is five times what we give the Palestinian Authority. The question they should be asking, but won't, is: How can American taxpayers afford to give "military aid" to the wealthy government of Israel, especially when that government uses our funds to drop white phosphorous on civilians in Gaza, kill international humanitarians on boats trying to break the Gaza siege, bulldoze Palestinian homes and orchards, and imprison peaceful protesters?" CODEPINK was in the hearing with signs saying "No More $$ to Israel," but we were not even allowed to quietly hold them. [more from source]

What stands out for me ten years later, is the domestic terrorism I was suffering at the hands of the Connecticut State Police. I really felt they would make good on their threat to kick my teeth out and take me for my last ride in a cruiser trunk in handcuffs. I was a landlord who had been tipped off that officers were going to use their informant drug dealers, vandals, and prostitutes to make 3 arrests on my properties I had fixed up from a boarded up condition to take them under the nuisance statute.

I had also been tipped that they were going to use a large breasted blond informant to get me to drive her home after I had drinks at the local bar where I could be beaten up by officers, maybe have drugs planted on me, where I could face 5 to 15 years in prison. My real crime in their eyes was getting in the way of their prostitution, drug running, and property/asset confiscation business. I proposed Civilian Oversight of Police and wrote letters to the editor. I was being tailed 24/7, sometimes by 2 cruisers wherever I went.

There was an alleged retired Mossad Colonel who owned a downtown bar in Stafford Springs, CT, married to a retired FBI agent. State Senator Tony Guglielmo had his picture with CIA drug king pin George H. W. Bush hanging in his insurance company office and hung out with CIA man, now former Congressman Rob Simmons. Tony is aware that I got prison and lost my property for having proposed Civilian Oversight of Police to him and for writing letters to the editor published in local newspapers. Ritt Goldstein proposed Civilian Oversight of Police around the same time period and was terrorized into fleeing the US to seek political asylum in Sweden.

Before 9/11 State Police offered me a choice to be on their organized crime side helping illegally seize legal guns, non-organized crime businesses and property, and to set up citizens for false arrests and imprisonment. I was railroaded to prison after being falsely arrested 10-11-01 for resisting being mugged on my own property. Police told me, "We can now do whatever we want." My daughter hasn't called me "Daddy" or returned my calls since my release from prison. Happy 9/11 Police State!

I was in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the Gulfport area of Mississippi and New Orleans Louisiana [scroll down here for photos]. I went to Bourbon St. one night and drove a bunch of "corporation police officers", private police, maybe Blackwater. Blackwater wasn't on my radar in 2005. I was told by them after heavy drinking that some of them were snipers on rooftops along with various White male state police officers and SWAT snipers to shoot Blacks during the news black out. Half size diesel motor refrigerated cargo ship containers were used to store victims of police shootings hauled out over deep water by double rotor helicopters, dumped at sea. These "police" told me about a better method of getting rid of unwanted citizens is needed using Katrina as a testbed. I was also told there was a detain list of politically active citizens in disaster and Martial Law areas. I was given the impression that those who topped the list could be murdered on sight.

I talked to a man with Canadian Parliament ties back in 2004. He talked about the FBI in Boston doing illegal wiretaps to cover-up organized crime murder-for-hire operations conducted for FBI going back decades, alleged child abduction by State Police for flights out of New Brunswick for White Sexual Slavery, and how his life went down the tubes when he tried to return cassette tapes of illegal FBI wiretaps he dumpster dived for behind a federal building. He broke down the Whitey Bulger Winter Hill Gang FBI Massachusetts State Police organized crime operation. The Canadian even went off the deep end, seemingly, claiming the US Military was using satellite weapons to microwave cows in New Brunswick farm fields. We may have the same type of organized crime operation running the US offshore disguised as mild mannered banks and corporations. God save us all.

I recall Connecticut State Police Sargeant Samuel Izzarelli telling me about how big mouths could get "hot shots" in prison to kill them slowly or give them horrible diseases. Izzarelli later became head of Troop C, Connecticut State Police, Tolland. He took my Connecticut State Police misconduct complaint. While I still owned the properties in Stafford Springs, Connecticut that police had terrorized me out of, Izzarelli told me that I would not have been a target of police had I not been a landlord, as all landlords are slumlords, AND a contractor, as all contractors are drunks. I figured Izzarelli told me that I would get a "hot shot" to get me to freak out when I was railroaded to prison. I figured that Izzarelli knew I was to be arrested and then endure a fixed trial where I'd get prison, beforehand. If you freak out in prison, you can be held indefinitely as a mental patient. More:

They need not have driver's licenses, insurance, or even registered cars to drive. David Hayes sold drugs openly for decades in Stafford Springs, Connecticut. He'd hold up traffic on the main drag, a state highway. He allegedly informed for police and allegedly sold crack cocaine to the then married selectman, initially to ply women for sex and then to smoke himself. That selectman eventually died of brain cancer. Stevie Carver was caught by police vandalizing my property drunk at 18, and on probation, after midnight. Connecticut State Police brutality and misconduct is becoming known, globally. Maybe the plot to terrorize, silence, or even kill Vermont US Senator Patrick Leahy with Anthrax was hatched out of Connecticut, maybe with the blessing of Wall St. NYC bankers. Many reside in Fairfield County Connecticut. West Hartford resident and UConn student, Storrs, Tomas Foral, then 26 was in possession of military grade Anthrax during the 2001 Anthrax Scare and Hoax. John A. Danaher III has West Hartford connections. He is a former US Attorney, Connecticut State Police Commissioner, and now is a Connecticut judge. Does Danaher get 3 separate pensions? Is Danaher a "Pension Pig"?

Ritt Goldstein proposed Civilian Oversight of Police around the same time I did in Connecticut. Ritt organized international experts and held a special legislative hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee in Hartford, Connecticut. I, Steven G. Erickson, got sentenced to a year in prison by Judge Jonathan J. Kaplan, a judge I had been trying to remove through legislators for years for his bad biased behavior in civil cases. [Chris Kennedy and Steven G. Erickson testimony against Kaplan] Kaplan was okay with a man getting probation for molesting a three year old, along with an armed robber. I get prison after police refused to protect and serve, and when I had to defend myself with pepper spray when I was attacked on my own property, I get prison. Does this sound fishy? Prosecutor Keith Courier told me I would be arrested and go to prison if I evicted prostitute Lana Thompson who told me she was going to give Courier oral sex to pay me back for evicting her. She wore high heels, a short blue, white poka dot dress, with her large breasts prominently displayed. Thompson moved into my 5 Church St. apartment house without my permission and then squatted for free. Should I have had to pay over $2000 a month so prosecutor Keith Courier and Police Officers can receive free oral and other sex?

When I contacted Senator Chris Dodd's office in the late 1990's about police seeing to aid criminals and drug dealers, to basically farm off of crime, police began to stalk, harass, threaten and terrorize me. Former Connecticut Represetative Mordasky's aid, Rose Marie, told me that I should sell my properties and leave the State of Connecticut before the State Police retaliated for the letters to the editor printed in local newspapers and for proposing Civilian Oversight of Police. Rose Marie told me that the legislative liaison from the State Police told her that I was going to be absolutely toasted in retaliation. Contacting State Senator John A. Kissel of Enfield immediately got me harassed by State Police Troopers and private investigators. I was being followed around by two troopers in two cars whenever I left my Stafford Springs or Somersville homes. Stafford Springs, Connecticut, State Senator Anthony "Tony" Guglielmo knew about the prostitute's threats on my voicemail, the State Police Stalking of me, and the State Police threats to arrest me and put me in prison if I did not shut my mouth and leave the state. Guglielmo knew my redressing grievances to him as a constituent cost me my home, my business, and my relationship with my daughter. Tony is on the Public Safety and Government Investigations Committee seemingly allowing continued police misconduct and for Connecticut to be a Police State. John A. Kissel seemed to help cover up Judge Jonathan J. Kaplan's judicial misconduct ongoingly.

Are Homeland Security Fusion Centers used to terrorize, stalk and harass, injure, falsely arrest, falsely imprison, and even kill citizens who inform others of public corruption and/or he existence of the abusive Police State?

Senator, Target of Anthrax Letter, Challenges F.B.I. Finding

WASHINGTON — Senator Patrick J. Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a target of the anthrax letters of 2001, said Wednesday that he did not believe the F.B.I.’s contention that an Army scientist conducted the attacks alone.

At a hearing of his committee, Mr. Leahy told the F.B.I. director, Robert S. Mueller III, that even if the bureau was right about the involvement of the scientist, Bruce E. Ivins, who killed himself in July before ever being charged, he thought there were accomplices.

“If he is the one who sent the letter, I do not believe in any way, shape or manner that he is the only person involved in this attack on Congress and the American people,” said Mr. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont.

“I believe there are others involved, either as accessories before or accessories after the fact,” he added. “I believe there are others who can be charged with murder.”

Mr. Leahy, who has received special briefings on the investigation because one of the anthrax-laced letters was addressed to him, later declined to elaborate. “Sorry,” said an aide, David Carle, “but he said his piece and does not intend to comment further today.”

Mr. Leahy was one of several senators at the hearing who raised questions about the bureau’s case. But Mr. Mueller said he stood by the conclusion that Dr. Ivins, who worked at the Army biodefense laboratory at Fort Detrick, Md., was solely responsible for the attacks.

Even after the anthrax case is formally closed, a step that officials say is likely in three to six months, “if we receive additional evidence indicating the participation of any additional person, we certainly would pursue that,” Mr. Mueller said.

On Tuesday, Mr. Mueller said he had asked the National Academy of Sciences to convene an expert panel to review the bureau’s scientific work on the case.

But Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa, said Wednesday that he did not think that was adequate. Mr. Grassley said the academy “would only be reviewing the science and not the detective work,” and added, “I believe we need an independent review of both.”

The hearing underscored the challenge the bureau faces in persuading Congress and the public that the case is resolved. In the audience was Steven J. Hatfill, another former Army biodefense scientist, whom the F.B.I. pursued as a suspect for several years before the Justice Department cleared him this summer and paid $4.6 million to settle a lawsuit he had filed against the government.

Dr. Hatfill did not speak. But Senator Grassley asked Mr. Mueller: “Should not the F.B.I. apologize to Dr. Hatfill? Please explain how chasing an innocent man for four years was not a mistake.”

Mr. Mueller replied that investigators had done nothing “inappropriate.” The settlement, he said, was not for scrutinizing Dr. Hatfill but for leaking information about him to the news media. “I abhor those leaks,” he said.

Mr. Leahy pressed Mr. Mueller to say what laboratories in the United States were capable of producing dry powder anthrax like that used in the attacks, specifically asking about the Dugway Proving Ground, an Army center in Utah, and the Battelle Memorial Institute, a government contractor in Ohio, both of which have made such powder in small quantities in the past.

But Mr. Mueller said he could answer the question only in a closed session because the matter involved classified information. The secrecy appeared likely to fuel rumors, circulating on the Internet and denied by the F.B.I., that the attacks had some link to a secret government bioweapons program.

Mr. Mueller, F.B.I. director since just before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, was criticized at the hearing by Mr. Leahy and others for what they described as his record of failing to answer in a timely manner the committee’s questions on a broad range of subjects.

But he was praised for what senators characterized as his courage in resisting some Bush administration counterterrorism tactics, including harsh interrogation methods and elements of the National Security Agency’s domestic surveillance program.

“Against intense and hostile pressure from the highest offices in the land,” said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, “you stood for the principle that all public offices have public duties and responsibilities.”

Five years out from the attacks, why do we still know so little about what really happened that day?

What we still dont know about 9/11 could kill us. By “we I mean the public that has been kept in the dark for five years by a president who may know the truth but has chosen to ignore it. Instead of grappling with the thorny origins of that disaster, George Bush willfully turned the nation’s attention and resources to a totally unrelated and disastrous imperial adventure in Iraq.

Just how unrelated was definitively established last Friday with the belated release of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s second report, which concluded that there not only was zero connection between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda, but that Iraq was the one country in the region where Osama bin Laden could not operate.

The story was much different in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, the two countries that had recognized and otherwise supported the Taliban government that hosted bin Laden during the run-up to 9/11. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, and yet there has been no serious investigation of the extended royal familys role in the recruitment of bin Laden’s soldiers” and the ease with which they secured legal visas to enter the United States.
While funds for Al Qaeda emanated from the Saudi kingdom, the essential logistical support for Al Qaeda came from Pakistan. Now, five years later, bin Laden and the remnants of his organization are assumed by the United States to have found refuge in Pakistans unruly tribal region, where the Pakistan government recently has reduced its forces, conceding that it could not defeat local tribesmen sympathetic to the Taliban.

Nor has there been any credible accounting of the role of Pakistan’s intelligence community, then and now, in support of Islamic terrorists on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghan border. Or in the passage of Pakistans nuclear secrets to what Bush refers to as “rogue nations.”

Recall that the predominant excuse for invading Iraq was the claim that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and would be willing to pass them on to rogue regimes and terrorists. Not only were such weapons not found, but the evidence from the accounts of former administration insiders and the Senate Intelligence Committee makes clear that the administration was consciously cherry-picking the evidence to shore up its fraudulent case.

There were weapons of mass destruction being shipped to “rogue nations, but they were coming from Pakistan in an extensive program headed by Abdul Qadeer (A.Q.) Khan, the father of the “Islamic bomb.” The Pakistan government has admitted that Khan passed on to North Korea, Libya and Iran technical know-how and vital materials for the creation of nuclear weapons. But Khan was pardoned of any crimes by Pakistan’s dictator general, President Gen. Pervez Musharraf. Khan is restricted only by a loose form of house arrest and has never been made available to U.S. investigators. Yet the Bush administration dropped the sanctions originally imposed on Pakistan in reprisal for its development of nuclear weapons in return for Pakistans support in the “war on terror.”

As for Afghanistan, the Taliban is on the rise. NATO commanders last week urgently requested more troops, and the country is now torn by the anarchy of a narco-state that is supplying 92% of the world’s heroin market and generating massive profits for gangsters and terrorists alike. The country is now as dangerous for American soldiers as is Iraq.

Despite this sorry record of neglect in Southwest Asia and the creation of a quagmire and recruiting poster for terrorism in Iraq, Bush once again arrogantly asserts that his policies have made us safer, even as he has undermined our domestic freedoms and mocked the U.S. commitment to international law, particularly concerning the treatment of prisoners.

Last week, Bush conceded that there were indeed secret CIA prisons, when finally announcing that the group of “key witnesses” to the 9/11 disaster would be moved to Guantanamo and for once afforded visits from the Red Cross and minimal legal representation. Some of them have been interrogated in secret for up to five years, with the Bush administration left as the sole interpreter of what they revealed.

After five years of official deceit, it is not too difficult to believe that the isolation of those prisoners was done less for reasons of learning the truth about 9/11 and more in an effort to politically manage the narrative released to the public.

There is glaring evidence that the latter was the case. The 9/11 Commission report contains a disclaimer box on page 146, in which it is stated that the report’s account of what happened on 9/11 was in considerable measure based on what those key witnesses allegedly told interrogators, and that the commissioners were not allowed to meet the witnesses or their interrogators.

We submitted questions for use in the interrogations, but had no control over whether, when or how questions of particular interest would be asked. Nor were we allowed to talk to the interrogators so that we could better judge the credibility of the detainees and clarify ambiguities in the reporting.”

In short, the most cited source that we have on what happened on 9/11, the much celebrated 9/11 Commission Report, was stage-managed by the Bush administration, just as it has controlled and distorted so much other information.

In light of that sorry record of the propagandistic exploitation of the 9/11 tragedy for partisan political purpose, is it any wonder that large numbers of Americans have doubts about all of it and that a considerable industry of documentaries and investigative reports has sprung up with alternative theories ranging from the plausible to the absurd?

In the sidebar to the left, we offer some examples of the better of those efforts, not by way of endorsing them but rather because there is so much reason to doubt the “truth” as the Bush administration has packaged it.

Smedley Darlington Butler (July 30, 1881 – June 21, 1940), nicknamed "The Fighting Quaker" and "Old Gimlet Eye", was a Major General in the U.S. Marine Corps, and at the time of his death the most decorated Marine in U.S. history. During his 34-year career as a Marine, he participated in military actions in the Philippines, China, in Central America and the Caribbean during the Banana Wars, and France in World War I. By the end of his career he had received 16 medals, five of which were for heroism. He is one of 19 people to twice receive the Medal of Honor, one of three to be awarded both the Marine Corps Brevet Medal and the Medal of Honor, and the only person to be awarded the Brevet Medal and two Medals of Honor, all for separate actions.

In addition to his military achievements, he served as the Director of Public Safety in Philadelphia for two years and was an outspoken critic of U.S. military adventurism. In his 1935 book War is a Racket, he described the workings of the military-industrial complex and, after retiring from service, became a popular speaker at meetings organized by veterans, pacifists and church groups in the 1930s.

In 1934 he was involved in a controversy known as the Business Plot when he told a congressional committee that a group of wealthy industrialists had approached him to lead a military coup to overthrow Franklin D. Roosevelt. The individuals that were involved denied the existence of a plot, and the media ridiculed the allegations. The final report of the committee stated that there was evidence that such a plot existed, but no charges were ever filed. The opinion of most historians is that while planning for a coup was not very advanced, wild schemes were discussed.

Butler continued his speaking engagements in an extended tour but in June 1940 checked himself into a naval hospital, dying a few weeks later from what was believed to be cancer. He was buried at Oaklands Cemetery in West Chester, Pennsylvania; his home has been maintained as a memorial and contains memorabilia collected during his various careers.

Early life

Smedley Butler was born July 30, 1881, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, the eldest of three sons. His parents Thomas Stalker Butler and Maud (Darlington) Butler^[1] were descended from local Quaker families. His father was a lawyer, a judge and, for 31 years, a Congressman and chair of the House Naval Affairs Committee during the Harding and Coolidge administrations. His maternal grandfather was Smedley Darlington, a Republican Congressman from 1887-1891.^[2]

Butler attended the West Chester Friends Graded High School, followed by The Haverford School, a secondary school popular with sons of upper-class Philadelphia families.^[3] A Haverford athlete, he became captain of its baseball team and quarterback of its football team.^[1] Against the wishes of his father, he left school 38 days before his seventeenth birthday to enlist in the Marine Corps during the Spanish–American War.^[1] Nevertheless, Haverford awarded him his high school diploma on June 6, 1898, before the end of his final year; his transcript stated he completed the Scientific Course "with Credit".^[1]

Military career, marriage and time as a coal miner

In the anti-Spanish war fever of 1898, Butler lied about his age to receive a direct commission as a Marine second lieutenant.^[1] He trained in Washington D.C. at the Marine Barracks on the corner of 8th and I Streets. In July 1898, he went to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, arriving shortly after its invasion and capture.^[4] His company soon returned to the U.S. and after a short break, he was assigned to the armored cruiser USS New York for four months.^[5] He came home to be mustered out of service in February 1899,^[5] but in April 1899, he accepted a commission as a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps.^[5]

Philippine–American War

The Marine Corps now sent him to the Manila, Philippines.^[6] On garrison duty with little to do, he turned to alcohol to relieve the boredom. He once became drunk and was temporarily relieved of command after an unspecified incident in his room.^[7]

In October 1899, he saw his first combat action when he led 300 Marines to take the town of Noveleta, from Filipino rebels known as Insurrectos. In the initial moments of the assault, his first sergeant was wounded. Butler briefly panicked, but quickly regained his composure and led his Marines in pursuit of the fleeing enemy.^[7] By noon the Marines had dispersed the rebels and taken the town. One Marine had been killed and ten were wounded. Another 50 Marines had been incapacitated by the humid tropical heat.^[8]

After the excitement of this combat, garrison duty again became routine. Butler had a very large Eagle, Globe, and Anchor tattoo made which started at his throat and extended to his waist. He also met Littleton Waller a fellow Marine with whom he maintained a life long friendship. When Waller received command of a company in Guam, he was allowed to select five officers to take with him; he chose Butler. Before they had departed, their orders were changed and they were sent to China aboard the USS Solace to help put down the Boxer Rebellion.^[8]

Boxer Rebellion

Once in China, Butler was initially deployed at Tientsin. He took part in the Battle of Tientsin on July 13, 1900. When he saw another Marine officer fall wounded, he climbed out of a trench to rescue him. Butler was then himself shot in the thigh. Another Marine helped him get to safety, but also was shot. Despite his leg wound, Butler assisted the wounded officer to the rear. Four enlisted men would receive the Medal of Honor in the battle. Butler's commanding officer, Major Littleton W. T. Waller, personally commended him and wrote that "for such reward as you may deem proper the following officers: Lieutenant Smedley D. Butler, for the admirable control of his men in all the fights of the week, for saving a wounded man at the risk of his own life, and under a very severe fire." Commissioned officers were not then eligible to receive the Medal of Honor, and Butler instead received a promotion to captain by brevet while he recovered in the hospital, two weeks before his nineteenth birthday. Butler was wounded in the chest at Battle of San Tan Pating, the bullet reportedly clipping part of Central America out of his tattoo. Because of his record in China, Butler became eligible for the Marine Corps Brevet Medal when it was created in 1921, and was one of only 20 Marines to receive it.^[9] His citation reads:

The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in transmitting to First Lieutenant Smedley Darlington Butler, United States Marine Corps, the Brevet Medal which is awarded in accordance with Marine Corps Order No. 26 (1921), for distinguished conduct and public service in the presence of the enemy while serving with the Second Battalion of Marines, near Tientsin, China, on 13 July 1900. On 28 March 1901, First Lieutenant Butler is appointed Captain by brevet, to take rank from 13 July 1900.^[10]

The Banana Wars

Butler participated in a series of occupations, police actions, and interventions by the United States in Central America and the Caribbean, commonly called the Banana Wars because their goal was to protect American commercial interests in the region, particularly those of the United Fruit Company. This company had significant financial stakes in the production of bananas, tobacco, sugar cane, and other products throughout the Caribbean, Central America and the northern portions of South America. The U.S. was also trying to advance its own political interests by maintaining its influence in the region and especially its control of the Panama Canal. These interventions started with the Spanish–American War in 1898 and ended with the withdrawal of troops from Haiti and President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Good Neighbor Policy in 1934.^[11] After his retirement, Butler became an outspoken critic of the business interests in the Caribbean, criticizing the ways in which U.S. businesses and Wall Street bankers imposed their agenda on United States foreign policy during this period.^[12]

Honduras

In 1903, Butler was stationed in the Caribbean on Culebra Island. Upon rumors of a Honduran revolt, the United States government ordered the Marines and a supporting naval detachment to sail to Honduras, 1,500 miles (2,414 km) to the west, to defend the U.S. Consulate in Honduras. Using a converted banana boat renamed the Panther, Butler and several hundred Marines landed at the port town of Puerto Cortés. In a letter home, he described the action: They were "prepared to land and shoot everybody and everything that was breaking the peace",^[13] but instead found a quiet town. The Marines re-boarded the Panther and continued up the coast line looking for rebels at several towns, but found none. When they arrived at Trujillo, however, they heard gunfire, and came upon a battle in progress that had been waged for 55 hours between the Bonillistas and the Honduran soldiers at a local fort. At the sight of the Marines, the fighting ceased and Butler led a detachment of Marines to the American consulate, where he found the consul, wrapped in an American flag, hiding among the floor beams. As soon as the Marines left the area with the shaken consul, the battle resumed and the Bonillistas soon controlled the government.^[13] During this expedition Butler earned the first of his nicknames, "Old Gimlet Eye". It was attributed to his feverish, bloodshot eyes—he was suffering from some unnamed tropic fever at the time—which enhanced his penetrating and bellicose stare.^[14]

Marriage and stint as a coal miner

Between the Honduran campaign and his next assignment, he returned to Philadelphia. He married Ethel Conway Peters of Philadelphia in Bay Head, New Jersey on June 30, 1905. His best man at the wedding was his former commanding officer in China, Lieutenant Colonel Littleton W. T. Waller.^[15] The couple would have three children: a daughter, Ethel Peters Butler, and two sons, Smedley Darlington, Jr. and Thomas Richard.^[16]

After the Honduras campaign, Butler was assigned to garrison duty in the Philippines, where he once launched a resupply mission across the stormy waters of Subic Bay after his isolated outpost ran out of rations. He was diagnosed as having a nervous breakdown in 1908, and received nine months sick leave for which he returned home. He found work as a coal miner in West Virginia, but did not find mining to his taste, and returned to active duty in the Marine Corps.^[17]

Central America

From 1909 to 1912, he served in Nicaragua, enforcing U.S. policy, and once again led his battalion to the relief of a rebel-besieged city, this time Granada, and again, with a 104-degree fever. In December 1909, he commanded the 3d Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, on the Isthmus of Panama. On August 11, 1912, he was temporarily detached to command an expeditionary battalion with which he participated in the bombardment, assault and capture of Coyotepe Hill, Nicaragua in October 1912. He remained in Nicaragua until November 1912, when he rejoined the Marines of 3d Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, at Camp Elliott, Panama.^[2]

Veracruz, Mexico, and first Medal of Honor

Butler and his family were living in Panama in January 1914 when he was ordered to report as the Marine officer of a battleship squadron massing off the coast of Mexico, near Veracruz, to monitor a revolutionary movement. He did not like leaving his family and the home they had established in Panama and he intended to request orders home as soon as he determined he was not needed.^[18]

On March 1, 1914, Butler and Admiral Frank Fletcher went ashore in Veracruz and made their way to Jalapa, Mexico and back. A purpose of the trip was to allow Butler and Fletcher to discuss the details of a future expedition into Mexico. Fletcher's plan required Butler to make his way into the country and develop a more detailed invasion plan while inside its borders. It was a spy mission and Butler was enthusiastic to get started. When Admiral Fletcher explained the plan to the commanders in Washington, D.C., they agreed to it. Butler was given the go-ahead. He entered Mexico and made his way to the U.S. Consulate in Mexico City, posing as a railroad official named "Mr. Johnson". He and the chief railroad inspector scoured the city, saying they were searching for a lost railroad employee; there was no lost employee, and in fact the employee they said was lost never existed. The ruse gave Butler access to various areas of the city. In the process of the so-called search, they located weapons in use by the Mexican army, and determined the sizes of units and states of readiness. They updated maps and verified the railroad lines for use in an impending US invasion.^[19] On March 7, 1914, he returned to Veracruz with the information he had gathered and presented it to his commanders. The invasion plan was eventually scrapped when authorities loyal to Victoriano Huerta detained a small American naval landing party in Tampico, Mexico, which became known as the Tampico Affair.^[20]

When President Woodrow Wilson discovered that an arms shipment was about to arrive in Mexico, he sent a contingent of Marines and sailors to Veracruz to intercept it on April 21, 1914. Over the next few days, street fighting and sniper fire posed a threat to Butler's force, but a door-to-door search routed out most of the resistance. By April 26, the landing force of 5,800 Marines and sailors secured the city, which they held for the next six months. By the end of the conflict, the Americans reported 17 dead and 63 wounded and the Mexican forces had 126 dead and 195 wounded. After the actions at Veracruz, the United States decided to minimize the bloodshed and changed their plans from a full invasion of Mexico to simply maintaining the city of Veracruz.^[21] For his actions on April 22, Butler was awarded his first Medal of Honor.^[2]^[10] The citation reads:

For distinguished conduct in battle, engagement of Vera Cruz, 22 April 1914. Major Butler was eminent and conspicuous in command of his battalion. He exhibited courage and skill in leading his men through the action of the 22d and in the final occupation of the city.^[10]

After the occupation of Veracruz, many military personnel received the Medal of Honor, an unusually high number that diminished somewhat the prestige of the award. The Army presented one, nine went to Marines and 46 were bestowed upon Navy personnel. During World War I, Butler, then a major, attempted to return his Medal, explaining he had done nothing to deserve it. The medal was returned with orders to keep it and to wear it as well.^[22]

Haiti and second Medal of Honor

In 1915, rebel Haitians known as Cacos killed the Haitian dictator Vilbrun Guillaume Sam. In response, the United States ordered the USS Connecticut to Haiti with Major Butler and a group of Marines on board. On October 24, 1915, 400 Cacos ambushed Butler's patrol of 44 mounted Marines when they approached Fort Dipitie. The Marines maintained their perimeter throughout the night. The next morning, they charged the much larger enemy force from three directions. The startled Haitians fled, thinking that the Marines had a much larger force.^[23] By mid-November 1915, most of the Cacos had been captured or killed and the insurgency generally suppressed, except for a small force of 200 Cacos at Fort Rivière, an old French-built stronghold deep in the country.^[23] Fort Rivière sat atop Montagne Noire, with its front reachable only by a steep, rocky slope; the other three sides fell away so sharply that an approach from those directions was considered to be impossible. Some Marine officers argued that it should be assaulted by a regiment supported by artillery, but Butler convinced his colonel to allow him to attack with just four companies of 24 men each, plus two machine gun detachments.^[23]

For the operation, Butler was given only three companies of Marines and some sailors from the USS Connecticut. They encircled the fort, and gradually closed in on it. Butler reached the fort from the southern side with the 15th Company and found a small opening in the wall. The Marines entered through the opening and engaged the Cacos in hand-to-hand combat. He and the Marines took the rebel stronghold on November 17, 1915, an action for which he received his second Medal of Honor, as well as the Haitian Medal of Honor.^[10] Only one Marine was injured in the assault when he was struck by a rock and lost two teeth.^[24] Butler's exploits impressed then Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt, who recommended the award based upon Butler's performance during the engagement in which all 200 Cacos were killed.^[25] Once the medal was approved and presented in 1917, Butler achieved the distinction, shared with Dan Daly, of being the only Marines to receive the Medal of Honor twice for separate actions.^[2] The citation reads:

For extraordinary heroism in action as Commanding Officer of detachments from the 5th, 13th, 23d Companies and the Marine and sailor detachment from the U.S.S. Connecticut, Major Butler led the attack on Fort Riviere, Haiti, 17 November 1915. Following a concentrated drive, several different detachments of Marines gradually closed in on the old French bastion fort in an effort to cut off all avenues of retreat for the Caco bandits. Reaching the fort on the southern side where there was a small opening in the wall, Major Butler gave the signal to attack and Marines from the 15th Company poured through the breach, engaged the Cacos in hand-to-hand combat, took the bastion and crushed the Caco resistance. Throughout this perilous action, Major Butler was conspicuous for his bravery and forceful leadership.^[10]

Subsequently, as the initial organizer and commanding officer of the Haitian Gendarmerie, the native police force, Butler established a record as a capable administrator. Under his supervision, social order, administered by the dictatorship, was largely restored and many vital public works projects were successfully completed.^[26] He recalled later that, during his time in Haiti, he and his troops "hunted the Cacos like pigs."^[24]

World War I

During World War I, to his disappointment, Butler was not assigned to a combat command on the Western Front. He made several requests for a posting in France, writing letters to his personal friend, Major General Wendell Cushing Neville, who was at the time assistant to the then Commandant of the Marine Corps, Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune. While Butler's superiors considered him brave and brilliant, they described him as "unreliable."^[4]

In October 1918, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general at the age of 37 and placed in command of Camp Pontanezen at Brest, France, a debarkation depot that funneled troops of the American Expeditionary Force to the battlefields. The camp had been plagued by horribly unsanitary, overcrowded and disorganized conditions. U.S. Secretary of War Newton Baker sent novelist Mary Roberts Rinehart to report on the camp. She later described how Butler tackled the sanitation issues. Butler began by solving the mud problem: "[T]he ground under the tents was nothing but mud, [so] he had raided the wharf at Brest of the duckboards no longer needed for the trenches, carted the first one himself up that four-mile hill to the camp, and thus provided something in the way of protection for the men to sleep on."^[4] General John J. Pershing authorized a duckboard shoulder patch for the units. This earned Butler another nickname, "Old Duckboard." For his exemplary service he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal of both the United States Army and Navy and the French Order of the Black Star.^[2]

The citation for the Army Distinguished Service Medal states:

Following the war, he became Commanding General of the Marine Barracks at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. At Quantico, he transformed the wartime training camp into a permanent Marine post. During a training exercise in western Virginia in 1921, he was told by a local farmer that Stonewall Jackson's arm was buried nearby, to which he replied, "Bosh! I will take a squad of Marines and dig up that spot to prove you wrong!"^[27] Butler found the arm in a box. He later replaced the wooden box with a metal one, and reburied the arm. He left a plaque on the granite monument marking the burial place of Jackson's arm; the plaque is no longer on the marker but can be viewed at the Chancellorsville Battlefield visitor's center.^[27]^[28]

China and stateside service

From 1927 to 1929, Butler was commander of the Marine Expeditionary Force in China and, while there, cleverly parlayed his influence among various generals and warlords to the protection of U.S. interests, ultimately winning the public acclaim of contending Chinese leaders. When Butler returned to the United States in 1929 he was promoted to major general, becoming, at age 48, the youngest major general of the Marine Corps. He directed the Quantico camp's growth until it became the "showplace" of the Corps.^[29] Butler won national attention by taking thousands of his men on long field marches, many of which he led from the front, to Gettysburg and other Civil War battle sites, where they conducted large-scale re-enactments before crowds of distinguished spectators.^[29]

In 1931, he publicly recounted gossip about Benito Mussolini in which the dictator allegedly struck a child with his automobile in a hit-and-run accident. The Italian government protested and President Hoover, who strongly disliked Butler, forced Secretary of the Navy Charles Francis Adams III to court-martial him. Butler became the first general officer to be placed under arrest since the Civil War. He apologized to Secretary Adams and the court martial was canceled with only a reprimand.^[30]

Director of Public Safety

At the urging of Butler's father, in 1924, the newly elected mayor of Philadelphia W. Freeland Kendrick asked him to leave the Marines to become the Director of Public Safety, the official in charge of running the city's police and fire departments. Philadelphia's municipal government was notoriously corrupt and Butler initially refused. Kendrick asked President Calvin Coolidge to intervene. Coolidge contacted Butler and authorized him to take the necessary leave from the Corps. At the request of the President, Butler served in the post from January 1924 until December 1925.^[2] He began his new job by assembling all 4,000 of the city police into the Metropolitan Opera House in shifts to introduce himself and inform them that things would change while he was in charge. He replaced corrupt police officers and, in some cases, switched entire units from one part of the city to another, undermining local protection rackets and profiteering.^[31]^[32]

Within 48 hours of taking over, Butler organized raids on more than 900 speakeasies, ordering them padlocked and, in many cases, destroyed. In addition to raiding the speakeasies, he also attempted to eliminate other illegal activities: bootlegging, prostitution, gambling and police corruption. More zealous than he was political, he ordered crackdowns on the social elite's favorite hangouts, such as the Ritz-Carlton and the Union League, as well as on drinking establishments that served the working class.^[33] Although he was effective in reducing crime and police corruption, he was a controversial leader. In one instance he made a statement that he would promote the first officer to kill a bandit and stated, "I don't believe there is a single bandit notch on a policeman's guns [sic] in this city, go out and get some."^[31] Although many of the local citizens and police felt that the raids were just a show, the raids continued for several weeks.^[32]

He implemented programs to improve city safety and security. He established policies and guidelines of administration, and developed a Philadelphia police uniform that resembled that of the Marine Corps.^[34] Other changes included military-style checkpoints into the city, bandit chasing squads armed with sawed-off shotguns, and armored police cars.^[34] The press began reporting on the good and the bad aspects of Butler's personal war on crime. The reports praised the new uniforms, the new programs and the reductions in crime but they also reflected the public's negative opinion of their new Public Safety director. Many felt that he was being too aggressive in his tactics and resented the reductions in their civil rights, such as the stopping of citizens at the city checkpoints. Butler frequently swore in his radio addresses, causing many citizens to suggest his behavior, particularly his language, was inappropriate for someone of his rank and stature.^[35] Some even suggested Butler acted like a military dictator, even charging that he inappropriately used active-duty Marines in some of his raids.^[35] Major R. A. Haynes, the federal Prohibition commissioner, visited the city in 1924, six months after Butler was appointed. He announced that "great progress"^[36] had been made in the city and attributed that success to Butler.^[36]

Eventually Butler's leadership style and the directness of actions undermined his support within the community. His departure seemed imminent. Mayor Kendrick reported to the press, "I had the guts to bring General Butler to Philadelphia and I have the guts to fire him."^[37] Feeling that his duties in Philadelphia were coming to an end, Butler contacted General Lejeune to prepare for his return to the Marine Corps. Not all of the city felt he was doing a bad job though and when the news started to break that he would be leaving, people began to gather at the Academy of Music. A group of 4,000 supporters assembled and negotiated a truce between him and the mayor to keep him in Philadelphia for a while longer, and the President authorized a one year extension for him.^[38]

His second year focused on executing arrest warrants, cracking down on crooked police and enforcing prohibition. On January 1, 1926, his leave from the Marine Corps ended and the President declined a request for a third extension. Butler received orders to report to San Diego and he prepared his family and his belongings for the new assignment.^[39] In light of his pending departure, Butler began to defy the Mayor and other key city officials. On the eve of his departure, he had an article printed in the paper stating his intention to stay and "finish the job".^[40] The mayor was surprised and furious when he read the press release the next morning and demanded his resignation.^[40] After almost two years in office, Butler resigned under pressure, stating later that "cleaning up Philadelphia was worse than any battle I was ever in."^[33]

Military retirement

In the old Marine tradition, when a Commandant retired or died, it was customary for the senior Marine Corps general to assume the position of Commandant while a new one was chosen. However, when Marine Corps commandant Major General Wendell C. Neville died July 8, 1930, Butler, at that time the senior major general in the Corps, was not appointed.^[29] Although he had significant support from many inside and outside the Corps, including John Lejeune and Josephus Daniels, two other Marine Corps generals were seriously considered for the post, Ben H. Fuller and John H. Russell. General Lejeune and others petitioned President Hoover, garnered support in the Senate and flooded then-Secretary of the Navy Charles Adams's desk with more than 2,500 letters of support.^[41] With the recent death of his influential father, however, Butler had lost much of his protection from his civilian superiors. The outspokenness that characterized his run-ins with the Mayor of Philadelphia, the "unreliability" mentioned by his superiors when opposing a posting to the Western Front, and his comments about Benito Mussolini resurfaced. Going against Marine Corps tradition, the position of Commandant went to Major General Ben H. Fuller and, at his own request, Butler retired from active duty on October 1, 1931.^[4]^[29]

Later years

Even before retiring from the Corps, Butler began developing his post-Corps career. In May 1931, he took part in a commission established by Oregon Governor Julius L. Meier. The commission laid the foundations for the Oregon State Police.^[42] He began lecturing at events and conferences and after his retirement from the Marines in 1931, he took this up full-time. He donated much of his earnings from his lucrative lecture circuits to the Philadelphia unemployment relief. He toured the western United States, making 60 speeches before returning for his daughter's marriage to Marine aviator Lieutenant John Wehle. Her wedding was the only time that he wore his dress blue uniform after he left the Marines.^[43]

Senate campaign

He announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in the Republican primary in Pennsylvania in March 1932 as a proponent of the prohibition, known as a "dry".^[43] He allied with Gifford Pinchot, but they were defeated by Senator James J. Davis.^[44]

Bonus Army

During his Senate campaign, Butler spoke out forcefully about the veterans bonus. Veterans of World War I, many of whom had been out of work since the beginning of the Great Depression, sought immediate cash payment of Service Certificates granted to them eight years earlier via the World War Adjusted Compensation Act of 1924. Each Service Certificate, issued to a qualified veteran soldier, bore a face value equal to the soldier's promised payment, plus compound interest. The problem was that the certificates (like bonds), matured 20 years from the date of original issuance, thus, under extant law, the Service Certificates could not be redeemed until 1945. In June 1932, approximately 43,000 marchers—17,000 of which were World War I veterans, their families, and affiliated groups, who protested in Washington, D.C., in spring and summer of 1932.^[45] The Bonus Expeditionary Force, also known as the "Bonus Army", marched on Washington to advocate the passage of the "soldier's bonus" for service during World War I. After Congress adjourned, bonus marchers remained in the city and became unruly. On July 28, 1932, two bonus marchers were shot by police, causing the entire mob to become hostile and riotous. The FBI, then known as the United States Bureau of Investigation, checked its fingerprint records to obtain the police records of individuals who had been arrested during the riots or who had participated in the bonus march.^[45]^[46] The veterans made camp in the Anacostia flats while they awaited the congressional decision on whether or not to pay the bonus. The motion, known as the Patnum bill, was decisively defeated, but the veterans stayed in their camp. Butler arrived with his young son Thomas, in mid July the day before the official eviction by the Hoover administration. He walked through the camp and spoke to the veterans; he told them that they were fine soldiers and they had a right to lobby Congress just as much as any corporation. He and his son spent the night and ate with the men, and in the morning Butler gave a speech to the camping veterans. He instructed them to keep their sense of humor and cautioned them not to do anything that would cost public sympathy.^[47] On July 28, army cavalry units led by General Douglas MacArthur dispersed the Bonus Army by riding through it and using gas. During the conflict several veterans were killed or injured and Butler declared himself a "Hoover-for-Ex-President-Republican".^[48]

Lectures

He became widely known for his outspoken lectures against war profiteering, U.S. military adventurism, and what he viewed as nascent fascism in the United States.

In December 1933, Butler toured the country with James E. Van Zandt to recruit members for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He described their effort as "trying to educate the soldiers out of the sucker class." In his speeches he denounced the Economy Act of 1933, called on veterans to organize politically to win their benefits, and condemned the FDR administration for its ties to big business. The VFW reprinted one of his speeches with the title "You Got to Get Mad" in its magazine Foreign Service. He said: "I believe in...taking Wall St. by the throat and shaking it up."^[49] He believed the American Legion was controlled by banking interests. On December 8, 1933, explaining why he believed veterans' interests were better served by the VFW than the American Legion, he said: "I said I have never known one leader of the American Legion who had never sold them out–and I mean it."^[50]

In addition to his speeches to pacifist groups, he served from 1935 to 1937 as a spokesman for the American League Against War and Fascism.^[51]^[52] In 1935 he wrote the exposé War Is a Racket, a trenchant condemnation of the profit motive behind warfare. His views on the subject are summarized in the following passage from a 1935 issue of the socialist magazine Common Sense:

I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class thug for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902–1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.^[12]

Allegations of the Business Plot

In November 1934, Butler alleged the existence of a political conspiracy of Wall Street interests to overthrow President Roosevelt, a series of allegations that came to be known in the media as the Business Plot.^[53]^[54] A special committee of the House of Representatives headed by Representatives John W. McCormack of Massachusetts and Samuel Dickstein of New York, who was later alleged to have been a paid agent of the NKVD,^[55] heard his testimony in secret.^[56] The McCormack-Dickstein committee was a precursor to the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

In November 1934, Butler told the committee that a group of businessmen, saying they were backed by a private army of 500,000 ex-soldiers and others, intended to establish a fascist dictatorship. Butler had been asked to lead it, he said, by Gerald P. MacGuire, a bond salesman with Grayson M–P Murphy & Co. The New York Times reported that Butler had told friends that General Hugh S. Johnson, a former official with the National Recovery Administration, was to be installed as dictator. Butler said MacGuire had told him the attempted coup was backed by three million dollars, and that the 500,000 men were probably to be assembled in Washington, D.C. the following year. All the parties alleged to be involved, including Johnson, said there was no truth in the story, calling it a joke and a fantasy.^[56]

In its report, the committee stated that it was unable to confirm Butler's statements other than the proposal from MacGuire, which it considered more or less confirmed by MacGuire's European reports.^[57] No prosecutions or further investigations followed, and historians have questioned whether or not a coup was actually close to execution, although most agree that some sort of "wild scheme" was contemplated and discussed.^[58]^[59]^[60]^[61] The news media initially dismissed the plot, with a New York Times editorial characterizing it as a "gigantic hoax".^[62] When the committee's final report was released, the Times said the committee "purported to report that a two-month investigation had convinced it that General Butler's story of a Fascist march on Washington was alarmingly true" and "... also alleged that definite proof had been found that the much publicized Fascist march on Washington, which was to have been led by Major. Gen. Smedley D. Butler, retired, according to testimony at a hearing, was actually contemplated".^[63]

The McCormack-Dickstein Committee confirmed some of Butler's accusations in its final report. "In the last few weeks of the committee's official life it received evidence showing that certain persons had made an attempt to establish a fascist organization in this country...There is no question that these attempts were discussed, were planned, and might have been placed in execution when and if the financial backers deemed it expedient."^[64] ^{[n 1]}^{[n 2]}

Death

In June 1940, Butler checked himself into the hospital after becoming sick a few weeks earlier. His doctor described his illness as an incurable condition of the upper gastro-intestinal tract that was probably cancer. His family remained by his side, even bringing his new car so he could see it from the window. He never had a chance to drive it. On June 21, 1940, Smedley Butler died in the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia.^[64]

The funeral was held at his home, attended by friends and family as well as several politicians, members of the Philadelphia police force and officers of the Marine Corps.^[65] He was buried at Oaklands Cemetery in West Chester, Pennsylvania.^[66] Since his death in 1940, his family has maintained his home as it was when he died, including a large amount of memorabilia he had collected throughout his varied career.^[65]

Partners in Crime: The U.S. Secret State and Mexico's "War on Drugs"

For decades, investigative journalists, researchers and analysts have noted the symbiotic relationships forged amongst international drug syndicates, neofascists and U.S. intelligence agencies, documenting the long and bloody history of U.S. complicity in the global drugs trade.

While the United States has pumped billions of dollars into failed drug eradication schemes in target countries through ill-conceived programs such as Plan Colombia and the Mérida Initiative, in the bizarro world of the "War on Drugs," corporate interests and geopolitics always trump law enforcement efforts to fight organized crime, particularly when the criminals are partners in crimes perpetrated by the secret state.

Since 2006, when Mexican President Felipe Calderón turned the Army loose, allegedly to "dismantle" the drug cartels slowly transforming Mexico into a killing field some 28,000 people, primarily along Mexico's northern border with the U.S., have lost their lives. Countless others have been wounded, forced to flee or simply "disappeared."

Writing in The Guardian, journalist Simon Jenkins tells us that "cocaine supplies routed through Mexico have made that country the drugs equivalent of a Gulf oil state."

"Rather than try to stem its own voracious appetite for drugs," Jenkins writes, "rich America shifts guilt on to poor supplier countries. Never was the law of economics--demand always evokes supply--so traduced as in Washington's drugs policy. America spends $40bn a year on narcotics policy, imprisoning a staggering 1.5m of its citizens under it."

Judging the results, one might even think the drug war solely exists as the principle means through which wealthy elites organize crime.

• December 13, 2009: The Observer reported that "drugs money worth billions of dollars kept the financial system afloat at the height of the global crisis." Antonio Maria Costa, head of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, said he saw evidence that "the proceeds of organised crime were 'the only liquid investment capital' available to some banks on the brink of collapse last year. He said that a majority of the $352bn (£216bn) of drugs profits was absorbed into the economic system as a result." The Observer informed us that this "will raise questions about crime's influence on the economic system at times of crisis." Costa told the British newspaper that "in many instances, the money from drugs was the only liquid investment capital. In the second half of 2008, liquidity was the banking system's main problem and hence liquid capital became an important factor." Although the UN's drug czar declined to identify the countries or banks that benefited from narcotics investments, he said that "inter-bank loans were funded by money that originated from the drugs trade and other illegal activities... There were signs that some banks were rescued that way."

• February 26, 2010: Responding to charges by left-wing critics and academics, Mexican president Felipe Calderón was forced to counter evidence that his government's "offensive" against narcotraffickers has left the "largest and most powerful of the cartels relatively unscathed," the Los Angeles Times disclosed. Critics accused the government of favoritism towards the Sinaloa cartel, claiming it "has been allowed to escape most of the government's firepower and carry on with its illegal business as usual." During a news conference, Calderón said such charges were "absolutely false." The president said the suggestion was "painful," and went on to say: "I can assure you that this government has attacked without discrimination all criminal groups in Mexico ... without taking into consideration whether it's the cartel of so-and-so or what's-his-name. We've fought them all." Edgardo Buscaglia, an academic expert on organized crime challenged the president and said that arrest figures "skew heavily" toward the other cartels. "By his calculation," the Times reported, "of more than 53,000 people arrested in drug-trafficking cases in the three years since Calderón took office, fewer than 1,000 worked for the Sinaloa organization." Commanded by Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, the Sinaloa cartel crime boss placed 937 on Forbes 2010 survey of the world's billionaires with an estimated net worth of $1 billion. A similar modus operandi is standard practice where foreign policy and corporate concerns of America's wealthiest clients overseas override efforts by law enforcement to choke-off the flow of narcotics. In Colombia, secret state agencies such as the CIA have long-favored drug organizations that have served as intelligence assets or death squads. Examples abound. Consider the "untouchable" status enjoyed by the Rodríguez Orejuela brothers' Cali cartel. During the 1980s, at the height of America's Central American interventions, cocaine shipped into the United States as part of the U.S. government's "guns-for-drugs" arrangement with Nicaraguan Contra rebels, was principally supplied by Cali traffickers. When Medellín drug lord Pablo Escobar's group was brought down, the CIA, DEA and the Pentagon's Delta Force relied on operatives funded by the rival Cali faction and Los Pepes, a vigilante group founded by drug lord Carlos Castaño and his brothers Fidel and Vicente. Los Pepes had operational links to the Colombian National Police, especially the Search Bloc (Bloque de Búsqueda) hunting Escobar, and acted on intelligence provided by the CIA/DEA/Delta Force to execute their missions. After Escobar's death, the Castaño brothers launched the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), a notorious right-wing death squad. The AUC in coordination with the Colombian Army, carried out multiple attacks and massacred thousands of leftists, trade union organizers and peasant activists. In 2001 under pressure from human rights groups, the U.S. State Department designated the AUC a "Foreign Terrorist Organization." This didn't however, prevent U.S. corporations such as Chiquita Brands International, Occidental Petroleum, Coca-Cola or the Drummond Company from allegedly hiring out AUC paramilitaries to murder trade union and peasant activists. In 2007, Chiquita pled guilty in federal district court and paid a $25 million fine under provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1991 for funding the AUC. Dole Food Company now faces similar charges. In 2002, the Justice Department unsealed an indictment against Carlos Castaño and accused him of trafficking some 17 tons of cocaine into the United States.

• March 9, 2010: The National Security Archive published a series of documents linking the U.S. secret state to Mexico's dirty warriors and drug cartel operatives under official protection by a CIA-allied intelligence agency. Following reporting by Peter Dale Scott that "both the FBI and CIA intervened in 1981 to block the indictment (on stolen car charges) of the drug-trafficking Mexican intelligence czar Miguel Nazar Haro, claiming that Nazar was 'an essential repeat essential contact for CIA station in Mexico City,' on matters of 'terrorism, intelligence, and counterintelligence'," the National Security Archive disclosed that Nazar Haro's corrupt Dirección Federal de Seguridad (DFS) was responsible for the disappearance, torture and murder of left-wing activists during the 1970s and '80s. The Archive revealed that "there is a deep connection between the former Mexican intelligence service and the country's drug mafias. As DFS agents took command of counterinsurgency raids in the 1970s, they often stumbled upon narcotics safe houses and quickly took on the job of protecting Mexico's drug cartels." Researchers Kate Doyle and Jesse Franzblau told us although "the DFS was disbanded in 1985 following revelations that it was behind the murder of DEA agent Enrique 'Kiki' Camarena, and Mexican journalist Manuel Buendia," of the 1,500 agents who suddenly found themselves unemployed, many "found their training in covert activities and brutal counterinsurgency operations easily adaptable to the needs of the criminal underworld." In 2006, the National Security Archive and investigative journalist Jefferson Morley disclosed that declassified U.S. documents "reveal CIA recruitment of agents within the upper echelons of the Mexican government between 1956 and 1969. The informants used in this secret program included President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz and future President Luis Echeverría." As we now know, when he served as Interior Secretary in the Díaz government, Echeverría oversaw the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre of student activists just days before the Summer Olympics were staged in Mexico City. "The documents," Morley wrote, "detail the relationships cultivated between senior CIA officers, such as chief of station Winston Scott, and Mexican government officials through a secret spy network code-named 'LITEMPO.' Operating out of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, Scott used the LITEMPO project to provide 'an unofficial channel for the exchange of selected sensitive political information which each government wanted the other to receive but not through public protocol exchanges'." These, and other disclosures reveal that "one of the most crime-ridden CIA assets we know of is the Mexican DFS, which the US helped to create," Peter Dale Scott wrote back in 2000. "From its foundation in the 1940s, the DFS, like other similar kryptocracies in Latin America, was deeply involved with international drug-traffickers. By the 1980s possession of a DFS card was recognized by DEA agents as a 'license to traffic;' DFS agents rode security for drug truck convoys, and used their police radios to check of signs of American police surveillance." Evidence suggests that similar protection and management of the global drug trade persists today.

• March 16, 2010: Wachovia Bank, a subsidiary of banking giant Wells Fargo & Co., signed a Deferred Prosecution Agreement with the federal government. Wells admitted in court that its unit failed to monitor and report some $378.4 billion in suspected money laundering transactions by narcotics traffickers between 2004-2008, "a sum equal to one-third of Mexico's current gross domestic product," Bloomberg Markets magazine revealed. Cash laundered by drug mafias were used to purchase a fleet of planes that subsequently shipped some 22 tons of cocaine into the United States. Wells paid the government $160 million to resolve the case. American Express Bank and Western Union also agreed recently to huge settlements with the government for similar offenses.

• May 19, 2010: Retired Mexican Army General Mario Arturo Acosta Chaparro was shot and wounded in Mexico City during an alleged robbery attempt. El Universal reports that police claimed that a thief wanted to "steal the general's watch" and shot him several times in the chest. In 2007, after a six-year imprisonment on charges of providing protection to late drug trafficking kingpin Amado Carrillo Fuentes, chief of the Juárez cartel and self-described "Lord of the Heavens," Acosta Chaparro was released from custody after his conviction was overturned on appeal. According to documents published by global whistleblowers WikiLeaks in 2009, the Swiss Bank Julius Baer's Cayman Islands unit, allegedly hid "several million dollars" of funds controlled by Acosta Chaparro and his wife, Silvia through a firm known as Symac Investments. WikiLeaks wondered whether Mexican authorities would "want to know whether the several millions of USD had anything to do with the allegations that Mr Chaparro, a former police chief from the Mexican state of Guerrero, stopped chasing his local drug dealers and joined them in business." According to reports cited by WikiLeaks, Acosta Chaparro was "already the subject of multiple allegations not only that he was a narcotrafficker but also that he had played a leading role in the dirty war of police and army against rural guerillas on his patch between 1975 and 1981. He was accused of organising the seizure, torture and murder of peasants who were suspected of helping the rebels and, with particular persistence of overseeing 'flights of death' in which well-tortured detainees were taken up in helicopters and pushed out over the ocean while still alive." Despite these serious charges, WikiLeaks informs us that "no action was taken at all [and] Chaparro's funds might still be managed by the former representative of Julius Baer, Mexico Curtis Lowell Jun in Zurich."

• June 7, 2010: Guerrero State Attorney General Albertico Guinto announced that 55 bodies were found deep in an abandoned silver mine outside Taxco, The Christian Science Monitor reported. In various states of decomposition, the victims showed signs of torture before being killed. "It was like a quicksand, but filled with bodies," Luis Rivera, the chief criminologist investigating the scene told The Washington Post. The recovery of the remains took nearly a week, "a task made more difficult" by the fact that some cadavers were mummified, others were dismembered by the fall and at least four of the victims had been decapitated. "There are headless bodies, but some of the heads don't match the bodies," Rivera said. Based on wound analysis of the corpses, investigators theorized that "many of the victims were alive when they were thrown down the mine shaft."

• June 12, 2010: The Narco News Bulletin reports "a special operations task force under the command of the Pentagon is currently in place south of the border providing advice and training to the Mexican Army in gathering intelligence, infiltrating and, as needed, taking direct action against narco-trafficking organizations." A "former U.S. government official who has experience dealing with covert operations," told journalist Bill Conroy that "black operations have been going on forever. The recent [mainstream] media reports about those operations under the Obama administration make it sound like it's a big scoop, but it's nothing new for those who understand how things really work." Perhaps we should recall how "things" have worked in the recent past. Back in 2003, the Brownsville Herald reported that Los Zetas, formerly the enforcement arm of the Gulf cartel, "feature 31 ex-soldiers once part of an elite division of the Mexican army, the Special Air Mobile Force Group. At least one-third of this battalion's deserters was trained at the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Ga., according to documents from the Mexican secretary of defense." According to the U.S. Defense Department, some 513 Mexican Special Forces soldiers received training at the School of the Americas, and about 120 "graduates" joined the Special Air Mobile Force. Luis Astorga, a drug trafficking expert at the National Autonomous University in Mexico City told the Herald: "There is a higher level of danger with the type of knowledge that these people have, their arms capacity, their knowledge of techniques and specialization in (drug) traffic operations. Traffickers traditionally don't have that; they pay other people for those services." Is history repeating itself under the Mérida Initiative? A former DEA official told Narco News in 2005 that "A lot of the Zetas came from former Mexican police offices or the military ... So they come from a diverse background. Some of them have prior training from the DEA, FBI and the U.S. military, as well as other agencies."

• June 28, 2010: Rodolfo Torre Cantu, the leading candidate for governor in the state of Tamaulipas was gunned down in one of the highest profile assassinations since a presidential candidate was murdered under suspicious circumstances in 1994. Four others, including local lawmaker Enrique Blackmore, were also killed when their campaign van was sprayed with machine gun fire by unknown assailants. Cantu had vowed to crack down on drug gangs if elected.

• July 15, 2010: A powerful car bomb explodes on a crowded street near a federal police headquarters in Ciudad Juárez, across the border from El Paso, Texas. Four are killed, including a police officer and doctor lured to the scene.

• July 15, 2010: Investigative journalist Daniel Hopsicker revealed that the pilot "of the American-registered DC-9 (N900SA) from St. Petersburg, FL caught carrying 5.5 tons of cocaine in Mexico's Yucatan several years ago," Carmelo Vasquez Guerra, "had been released from prison less than two years after being arrested." Readers will recall that the DC-9 and another American-registered plane, a Gulfstream II business jet (N987SA) that spilled "4 tons of cocaine across a muddy field," Hopsicker reported, were used in CIA "rendition" (torture) flights and had been purchased by Mexican drug gangs with funds laundered through Wachovia Bank. "The shocking news was delivered via an international headline stating that a pilot named Carmelo Vasquez Guerra had been arrested in the West African nation of Guinea Bissau on a twin-engine Gulfstream II carrying... what else? 550 kilos--a half-ton--of cocaine." According to Hopsicker, the drug pilot was arrested--and released--from three countries "under mysterious and unexplained circumstances." Seeking answers to the pilot's series of seemingly miraculous escapes, Hopsicker drolly observed: "Maybe there is an innocent explanation for everything. Maybe drugs just show up, unbidden, like unwanted guests. And maybe Carmelo Vasquez Guerra didn't escape each time he got busted. Maybe he just 'released himself on his own recognizance'."

• July 18, 2010: In the wake of the massacre of 17 people attending a birthday party in the northern city of Torreon, The Christian Science Monitor revealed that inmates from a prison in the nearby city of Gomez Palacio were the authors of the crime. "According to witnesses, the inmates were allowed to leave with authorization of the prison director ... to carry out instructions for revenge attacks using official vehicles and using guards' weapons for executions," said Ricardo Najera, a spokesman from the attorney general's office. After the atrocity, inmates drove back to their cells.

• July 20, 2010: Following the Juárez car bomb blast that killed four, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Arturo Sarukhan, downplayed it's significance and claimed, though disturbing, violence "has not yet reached the level of terrorism," The Washington Post reported. "Terrorism," the U.S. ambassador said, "refers to the acts by groups with political objectives that seek to control the government." But what if those with "political objectives" and limitless funds from the illicit trade already control the state's security apparatus?

• July 25, 2010: Of the more than 28,000 people killed since December 2006 when President Felipe Calderón "hurled the Mexican Army into the anti-cartel battle," nearly 6,300 (a quarter of the total) were murdered in Ciudad Juárez, The Nation reports. Under a three year deal, the United States has bankrolled the Army offensive with some $1.4 billion in funds under the Mérida Initiative. Journalists Charles Bowden and Molly Molloy wrote in response to Ambassador Sarukhan's statement: "We are supposed to believe in their evidence that 90 percent of the dead are criminals, but that they have no evidence at all of narco-terrorism?" Bowden and Molloy aver, "This, despite numerous incidents of grenades and other explosives being used in recent attacks in the states of Michoacan, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Guerrero, Sonora and many other places in Mexico. And that 'armed commandos' dressed like soldiers and wielding high-powered machine guns are witnessed at the scenes of hundreds of massacres documented since 2008." According to expert Diego Valle, the steep rise in homicide rates correlate directly to increased military operations against some cartels. In his recent study, Statistical Analysis and Visualisation of the Drug War in Mexico, Valle writes that "military operations in Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Veracruz and Durango have coincided with increases in homicides and attempts by the Sinaloa cartel to take over drug trafficking routes from rival cartels. After the army took control of Ciudad Juárez it became the most violent city in the world."

• July 27, 2010: Building on alliances forged during the Cold War amongst right-wing political gangs and drug traffickers, cartel operations in Central America have soared, The Washington Post informs us. Since 2006, drug networks in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras "are burrowing deeper into a region with the highest murder rates in the world." According to United Nations data, cocaine seizures in Central America "nearly quadrupled" between 2004 and 2007. "Over the past two years," the Post reports, "two national police chiefs and the former president have been arrested on charges related to drug trafficking or corruption. Two former interior ministers are fugitives." In Honduras, where a U.S.-sponsored coup toppled a democratically elected president in 2009, Mexican cartels have established "command-and-control" centers to coordinate cocaine shipments by sea and air to North America and Europe. In El Salvador, that country's leftist president has said that the violent street gang, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), have forged a working relationship with drug cartels that could eventually help the group mature into "an international syndicate."

• August 22, 2010: Journalist Bill Conroy reports in The Narco News Bulletin that despite surging violence in Ciudad Juárez, the murder-plagued city "where some 10,000 small businesses have closed their doors since 2008 due, in large part, to a wave of burglaries, kidnappings, extortion and murders that has washed over the city during the past two and a half years," why is the violence not affecting the entire city? Conroy writes "there is often an exception to most rules, and in the case of Juárez, the rule of violence does not extend to its industrial zones, which are home to some 360 maquiladora factories that employ more than 190,000 people." According to a report obtained by Narco News from the El Paso Regional Economic Development Corporation, or REDCO, "there was only one homicide carried out in the maquila industrial zones" since 2008. "That's right," Conroy avers, "just one murder in this huge swath of Juárez that is dotted with maquila plants operated by huge corporations such as General Motors, Delphi, Motorola, Visteon, TECMA and Honeywell. Maquiladoras, also known as twin plants, are Mexico-based factories owned and/or operated by foreign companies that benefit from the cheap labor and favorable tax treatment." REDCO officials refused to comment to Narco News. However, Conroy writes, TECMA executive vice president Toby Spoon told ABC's El Paso affiliate KVIA that "If they [the narco-trafficking organizations] got the maquila industry, or American companies or foreign companies, if they became targets of this, it would just take it to a whole different level, and nobody wants that." Isn't that an interesting statement! "So it would appear, based on that comment," Conroy writes, "that the narco-trafficking organizations, the Mexican government and the maquila factory owners have some sort of unspoken alliance of convenience that assures protection for the maquila factories and their professional employees." Indeed, Narco News discovered that "at last three security zones have been set up in Juárez that are guarded by Mexican soldiers who assure safe passage for Maquila executives commuting from El Paso to the Juárez factory sites. In addition, the maquila industrial zones themselves, according to media reports, are under the close watch of Mexican state police as well as private security guards employed by the maquilas." This is the same Army and federal police force that is seemingly "powerless" to halt the slaughter of Juárez citizens by ubiquitous, yet invisible, drug gangs which have transformed that city, and northern Mexico, into a free-fire zone. Curious indeed!

• August 25, 2010: A wounded Ecuadorean migrant stumbled to a Mexican Marine checkpoint in the northern state of Tamaulipas and leads officials to a blood-splashed room. Inside, authorities discover the bodies of 58 men and 14 women, allegedly murdered by Los Zetas, or another cartel seeking to discredit their rivals. "Years ago," IPS reported, "Los Zetas found a gold mine: kidnapping undocumented migrants." The UN estimates that some half million undocumented migrants from Central and South America "cross Mexico from south to north every year in their attempt to reach the United States." And more than 10,000 were kidnapped between September 2009 and February 2010 according to Mexico's National Human Rights Commission. According to multiple press reports, the migrants were killed after they refused to serve as forced labor for Los Zetas.

• August 26, 2010: A veteran officer with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection service (CBP), a satrapy within the sprawling Department of Homeland Security, Martha Alicia Garnica, 43, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for drug trafficking, human smuggling and bribery. "Three other defendants," the Center for Investigative Reporting disclosed, received prison sentences, ranging from two years to a little more than five years. A fourth defendant was murdered in February in Juárez."

• August 27, 2010: "Federal prosecutors," The Nation revealed, "have used top leaders of Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), known as the most violent gang in the US and Central America, as secret informants over a decade of murders, drug-trafficking and car-jackings across a dozen US states and several Central American countries." Former California state senator Tom Hayden told us that "the informants are identified as Nelson Comandari, described by law enforcement as 'the CEO of Mara Salvatrucha,' and his self described 'right hand man,' Jorge Pineda, nicknamed 'Dopey' because of his drug-dealing background." According to The Nation, Comandari's grandfather "was Col. Agustin Martinez Varela, a powerful right-wing Salvadoran who served as an interior minister during El Salvador's civil wars. Comandari's uncle, Franklin Varela, was a central informant in the Reagan administration's scandalous investigation into the activist Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador [CISPES]." In his 1998 written testimony to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, retired DEA Special Agent Celerino Castillo III told Congress that "while our government shouted 'Just Say No !', entire Central and South American nations fell into what are now known as, 'Cocaine democracies'." Castillo testified: "On Jan. 18, 1985, [retired CIA officer Felix] Rodriguez allegedly met with money-launderer Ramon Milan-Rodriguez, who had moved $1.5 billion for the Medellin cartel. Milan testified before a Senate Investigation on the Contras' drug smuggling, that before this 1985 meeting, he had granted Felix Rodriguez's request and given $10 million from the cocaine for the Contras." Contra drug operations were coordinated by the CIA out of El Salvador's Ilopango airport and protected from prying eyes, and U.S. law enforcement investigators, by troops drawn from by Col. Varela's interior ministry. According to the National Security Archive's Oliver North File, "Mr. North's diary entries, from the reporter's notebooks he kept in those years, noted multiple reports of drug smuggling among the contras. A Washington Post investigation published on 22 October 1994 found no evidence he had relayed these reports to the DEA or other law enforcement authorities."

• August 28, 2010: The bullet-ridden body of Roberto Suarez Vasquez, the lead investigator probing the murder of 72 Central- and South American migrants was found on a highway not far from where the massacre took place.

• August 31, 2010: The entire 2,000 mile U.S.-Mexico border will be monitored by Predator drones. Part of a $600 million package passed by Congress earlier this year, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the border was now "safer than ever."

• August 31, 2010: Some 3,200 Mexican federal police, "nearly a tenth of the force," have been fired this year "under new rules designed to weed out crooked cops and modernize law enforcement," the Los Angeles Times reports. Amongst the 465 cops arrested in early August, federal authorities took four commanders into custody after 250 subordinates in violence-plagued Ciudad Juárez publicly accused them of corruption.

• September 6, 2010: The Los Angeles Times reports that "drug traffickers who siphon off natural gas, gasoline and even crude, rob the Mexican treasury of hundreds of millions of dollars annually." The newspaper disclosed that "the cartels have taken sabotage to a new level: They've hobbled key operations in parts of the Burgos Basin, home to Mexico's biggest natural gas fields." Times' journalist Tracy Wilkinson writes that "the world's seventh-largest oil producer has become another casualty of the drug war." A series of kidnappings and murders in the gas-rich region has curtailed production. Pemex officials refused to comment and have sought to "repress information on the kidnappings." Despite a massive outcry by Mexico's citizens against moves by the Calderón administration to privatize Pemex, which generates some $77 billion in annual revenue, Chevron's Latin American operations chief Ali Moshiri told the Houston Chronicle that the company wants to make Mexico "a big part of our portfolio." In this light, violence against Pemex workers and crippled production is nothing more than an odd coincidence, right?

• September 8, 2010: Speaking at the elite Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton claimed that Mexico's drug cartels "increasingly resemble an insurgency with the power to challenge the government's control of wide swaths of its own soil," the Los Angeles Times reported. Comparing Mexico to Colombia, Clinton's comments reflect past U.S. claims that Colombia's well-entrenched drug mafias were part of a leftist "narcoguerrilla" strategy to topple the government. This is a mendacious comparison given rich evidence that for decades Colombia's leading mafia groups are allied with extreme right-wing forces in that country's political establishment. Declassified U.S. documents revealed that former President Álvaro Uribe, enjoyed close ties to drug-linked paramilitary organizations. A darling of the Pentagon and the American secret state, according to multiple press reports and documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the National Security Archive, when Uribe was mayor of Medellín, the epicenter of Pablo Escobar's narcoempire, the now-dead mafia boss's former lover Virginia Vallejo, told the Spanish paper El País: "Pablo used to say, that if it weren't for that blessed little boy [Uribe], we would have to swim to Miami to get drugs to the gringos." According to Vallejo, when Uribe was the director of Colombia's Civil Aviation authority, he granted dozens of licenses for runways and hundreds of permits for planes and helicopters, on which the drug trade's infrastructure was built. The 1991 document by the Pentagon's Defense Intelligence Agency noted that Uribe was a "close personal friend of Pablo Escobar" who was "dedicated to collaboration with the Medellín [drug] cartel at high government levels."

• September 9, 2010: 25 people, including women and teenagers ranging in age from 15 to 60, were murdered in Ciudad Juárez by Juárez cartel gunmen, the El Paso Times reports. The operation was allegedly mounted against their rivals in the Sinaloa drugs organization, apparently in retaliation for a kidnapping. The well-coordinated attacks took place in different parts of the city. Despite thousands of Mexican Army troops and federal police stationed in the city, the attacks took place with impunity. Since 2008, more than 6,400 Juárez citizens have been killed. While President Calderón claims that 90 percent of victims are connected to drug organizations, evidence suggests that like the 72 migrant workers slaughtered in Tamaulipas in August, most of the victims had no ties to the murderous trade.

• September 10, 2010: Seeking to calm a "diplomatic furor" over recent comments by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that Mexico "resembled Colombia" during the heyday of cartel power, President Obama disputed Clinton's assertion, the Los Angeles Times reported. In what could generously be described as a replay of President Ronald Reagan's repeated denials that right-wing Nicaraguan Contra "rebels" were deeply mired in cocaine trafficking, Obama said that "Mexico is a great democracy, vibrant, with a growing economy," the president told the Spanish-language La Opinion newspaper. "And as a result, what is happening there can't be compared with what happened in Colombia 20 years ago." Human rights abuses are widespread. According to Amnesty International, political dissidents, environmentalists, trade union activists and indigenous human rights defenders are routinely disappeared, tortured or murdered with impunity.

• September 12, 2010: An in-depth Washington Post profile of convicted U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer Martha Garnica, sentenced in August for drug smuggling and human trafficking along the border, revealed that "the number of CBP corruption investigations opened by the inspector general climbed from 245 in 2006 to more than 770 this year." The Post reports that "corruption cases at its sister agency, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, rose from 66 to more than 220 over the same period." The vast majority of cases involve "illegal trafficking of drugs, guns, weapons and cash across the Southwest border." Although Garnica received a 20-year sentence for her crimes, not a single criminal indictment has been issued by the U.S. Justice Department for crimes committed by top corporate officers of Wells Fargo-owned Wachovia Bank, who admitted earlier this year to laundering hundreds of billions of dollars for Mexico's ultra-violent drug mafias. Aside from Bloomberg Markets magazine's comprehensive investigation, neither the Post, nor other U.S. "newspaper of record" reported on the bank's "deferred prosecution agreement" with the federal government.

• September 15, 2010: Writing in The Nation, investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill revealed that the private security firm Blackwater "have provided intelligence, training and security services to US and foreign governments as well as several multinational corporations." According to Scahill, "former CIA paramilitary officer Enrique 'Ric' Prado, set up a global network of foreign operatives, offering their 'deniability' as a 'big plus' for potential Blackwater customers." While Blackwater's mercenary network was originally created to service CIA black ops, Prado wrote an email to a Total Intelligence executive (a Blackwater cut-out) with the subject line, "Possible Opportunity in DEA-Read and Delete," a pitch to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The Nation reports "that executive was an eighteen-year DEA veteran with extensive government connections." Prado explained that Blackwater "has developed 'a rapidly growing, worldwide network of folks that can do everything from surveillance to ground truth to disruption operations.' He added, 'These are all foreign nationals (except for a few cases where US persons are the conduit but no longer 'play' on the street), so deniability is built in and should be a big plus'." According to Scahill, the executive wrote back and suggested that "one of the best places to start may be the Special Operations Division, (SOD)." Scahill writes that "the SOD is a secretive joint command within the U.S. Justice Department, run by the DEA" and serves "as the command-and-control center for some of the most sensitive counternarcotics and law enforcement operations conducted by federal forces." As we have seen with other clandestine operations run amok in the drug war, "deniable" assets, especially when they are "foreign nationals" with no direct ties to the U.S. government, have a funny habit of lending their well-compensated "expertise" to drug traffickers. One is reminded of the case of Israeli mercenary Yair Klein, a former IDF lieutenant colonel. Klein's private security firm, Spearhead Ltd., produced training videos and tutored drug lord Carlos Castaño's AUC in the fine art of murder. In 2001, Klein was convicted by a Colombian court for his firm's work with right-wing death squads and the enforcement arms of several drug trafficking organizations. According to Democracy Now!, Klein was "accused of training Mafia assassins" and "suspected of involvement in the explosion of a Colombian airliner in November 1989." Given Blackwater's sensitivity to human rights (just ask Baghdad residents!) one can be certain that the mercenary firm's interest in the drug war will assure Mexico's citizens that help is on the way!

The Grim Road Ahead

It should be clear: the "War on Drugs" like the "War on Terror" is a colossal, multibillion dollar fraud perpetrated on the American people.

North Americans consume drugs and line the pockets of state-connected killers; Latin Americans do the dying. Low-level dealers and the poor who buy their illicit products are rewarded with wrecked lives, devastated communities and one-way tickets to prison.

U.S. banking and financial elites reap whirlwind profits and are handed virtual get-out-of-jail-free cards by federal prosecutors and courts that levy fines regarded as little more than chump change by the banks. The CIA and their far-flung network of private contractors siphon-off illegal proceeds from the grim trade laundered through U.S. and European financial institutions.

The U.S. secret state, seeking geopolitical advantage over their imperialist rivals deploy drug mafias and right-wing terrorists as plausibly deniable intelligence assets, just as they have for decades.

Congressional banking and intelligence probes are killed. Black operations in areas of strategic interest to U.S. policy planners spread death and destruction, particularly where rich petrochemical and mineral reserves owned by other people are lusted after by American multinationals.

Corporate media collaborate in this charade; pointing the finger at black and brown citizens, white elites on both sides of the border escape scrutiny. It is far easier to demonize black and brown youth as "predators" than to take a hard look in the mirror at a ruling class that are the real American drug lords.

And still we wonder why Mexico is slowly transformed into a killing field. [source]

Cutting Through Vote Fraud Claims, Hypocrisy

Recent events show why election theft deserves much more scrutiny than it receives from either government officials or news reporters.

Most dramatically, a federal judge has released the 2008 testimony of GOP IT guru Michael Connell, above. The Ohio resident died in a mysterious plane crash that year after anonymous warnings he would be killed if he testified about his work with Karl Rove and others helping the Bush-Cheney ticket win in 2000 and 2004.

Other recent news includes claims by both major parties of irregularities in last week's Wisconsin state senate recall elections. In a pattern familiar nationally, Democrats suspect vote hiding by a partisan GOP elections supervisor and Republicans allege illegal inducements by Democrats to encourage voting. Elsewhere, Fox News played up a report about how a county judge in Nevada called the community-organizing group ACORN "reprehensible" on Aug. 10 and ordered a $5,000 fine for the defunct group because it paid a bonus to workers who registered voters.

To cut through the confusion on such disputes, the Justice Integrity Project I lead created a research guide with excerpts and hot links to dozens of important recent articles, books and films by election fraud researchers with diverse views. But it is weighted to materials provided by status quo critics because they face the burden of challenging authority and are typically ignored by corporate-controlled media. Our guide includes also commentaries by Fox News, and polemicists Andrew Breitbart and John Fund. They have been leaders in fostering unwarranted public fears that election fraud largely involves ineligible, poor and largely Democratic voters who may distort results.

Instead, the evidence shows that electronic voting fraud, voter suppression and similar dirty tricks by public officials pose a serious threat to the democratic process.

Yet this research is difficult for reporters and activists alike because officials control the information. Also, research into official wrongdoing tends to be sporadic, under-funded and so controversial as to be career-threatening for researchers. Major news organizations are reluctant to report even allegations of official fraud and other wrongdoing, especially in the most important elections. So, reporters and other researchers need courage and skill, as well as management support.

Statistics professor Steven Freeman and In These Times editor Joel Bleifuss devote an entire chapter to journalistic cover-up in their book, Was the 2004 Presidential Election Stolen? The book argues that exit polls and other clues prove massive election fraud that flipped the election -- and that leading news organizations not only downplayed the evidence but suppressed much of it outright or misreported results.

The paperback edition of New York University professor Mark Crispin Miller's book, Fooled Again, contains a 100-page Afterword summarizing how the mainstream media avoids the issue.

One prominent national reporter assigned to such matters privately explained to me recently the thinking of his editors: They want rock-solid proof of conspiracy before even mentioning claims of misconduct for fear of ruining public confidence in the campaign and elections process. Yet by that standard, readers would learn little about any public issue. The Washington Post's 1970s Watergate investigation, for example, was a series of reports that incrementally moved the story forward.

Ohio's 2004 Election
The big case in the field of electronic elections fraud involves Ohio returns in the 2004 Presidential race between incumbent Republican George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, the Democrat. Joan Brunwasser recently published on OpEd News an illuminating interview on recent developments. But this is a story that deserves revisiting at least as much as the MSM's daily and largely inconsequential updates on the horse race between 2012 contenders.

Connell's testimony on Nov. 3, 2008 was a pre-trial deposition in a suit by Ohio voters alleging an election fraud conspiracy led by Republicans running the state government and the election.

Defendants in the King Lincoln Bronzeville v. Blackwell case include then-Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell, below, Rove and other officials and contractors. Defendants deny impropriety in the Ohio voting, where Bush's reported margin was 118,775 votes. This enabled him to win the state's 20 electoral votes and the presidency by an electoral vote of 286 to 251.

Connell described a mind-boggling electronic system whereby Blackwell -- who counted the votes as Secretary of State but also chaired the Ohio Bush-Cheney campaign -- hired Connell's company, GovTech Solutions. GovTech then linked Ohio's 2004 Presidential election returns on Election Day to the computers of the partisan GOP contractor called SmarTech in Tennessee. Connell denied any wrongdoing.

But Bob Fitrakis and Clifford Arnebeck, two of the most prominent attorneys for the plaintiffs, held a press conference in July 2008, three months before their deposition, to say that supporters of the suit had received multiple anonymous warnings that Connell would be killed if he proceeded with his deposition. They released a letter to then-Attorney Gen. Michael Mukasey, other authorities and the news media asking for protection for Connell.

The attorneys later said Connell's testimony on Nov. 3, 2008 turned out to be so valuable that he would be their star witness at trial along with Stephen Spoonamore, another Republican IT consultant. Spoonamore is a former IT director for GOP senator and 2008 Presidential nominee John McCain.

Spoonamore has said the system Connell set up enabled massive fraud that decided the nation's 2004 Presidential election. Connell, a longtime Republican activist, was suspected also of helping enable Bush-Cheney malfeasance in Florida in 2000.

After elections created a Republican majority in Congress House Republicans awarded Connell contracts to set up the email system serving both Congress and various partisan Republican organizations. SmarTech clients included the anti-Kerry group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in 2004. Also, it ran a private system for the Bush White House that enabled its users to bypass a government-run system subject to more rigorous oversight by Congress, the courts or other watchdogs.

Connell's 2008 testimony has been the subject of much speculation in voting rights circles. An expert pilot, he died at age 45 in a single-plane crash six weeks after his testimony. His Piper Saratoga plane took off from a Maryland airfield for a trip to Ohio. A preliminary federal investigation failed to reach a conclusion for the crash but found no signs of mischief.

Excerpted below are several of the most prominent commentaries on the likelihood of foul play in his death. One is by investigative reporter Wayne Madsen, who photographed the take-off airfield in College Park to show how easy it could have been for a saboteur to have slipped into the vicinity.

Madsen, a former Navy investigator, NSA analyst and frequent contributor to OpEd News, has written extensively about how small planes used by political figures are vulnerable to sabotage, including ground-to-air interference difficult for official investigators later to detect. A similar view was voiced in a 2009 column by Rebecca Abrahams, Mike Connell's Family Copes With His Mysterious Death, Tipsters, Legal Options.

Blackwell has taken a lead in denouncing accusers as sore losers. Like other defendants, he has denied wrongdoing both in court papers and in other public statements. But few reporters dare ever press for details or other comments, and Rove does not even bother mentioning the Ohio claims in his 2010 memoir, Courage and Consequence.

Cyber Trail
Connell was a longtime GOP activist motivated in politics by his strong anti-abortion views. In his testimony, he described how he founded two IT consultancies to provide services to the Bush White House, where he worked closely with Rove. Connell's firms were New Media Communications, Inc. and GovTech.

In 2000 and 2004, Connell's New Media Communications helped on campaign IT strategy for the Bush-Cheney ticket and the Republican National Committee. Connell's other firm worked for a various government clients, including: the U.S. House of Representatives; the House Republican Conference; the House Intelligence Committee; the House Judiciary Committee; the House Ways & Means Committee and the House Financial Services Committee.

Connell said he used GovTech for such official government work, and New Media for his partisan, pro-GOP political work. Also, Connell described in his testimony how SmarTech handled such sensitive matters as White House emails, which are supposed to be preserved as government records. Bush officials later said key emails were inadvertently lost. This was after congressional investigators demanded the emails as part of the House Judiciary Committee 2007 investigation of the notorious Bush DOJ purge of nine prosecutors in 2006.

Several of those fired were Republicans who had resisted political pressure to bring what they regarded as unwarranted voting fraud cases against Democrats. Among them was New Mexico U.S. Attorney David Iglesias. Another was Todd Graves, U.S. attorney for the Kansas City-based western district of Missouri.

Iglesias discusses voting fraud extensively in his 2008 memoir, In Justice: Inside the Scandal that Rocked the Bush Administration. Iglesias had been appointed to his powerful regional post in the first year of the Bush presidency.

He recalls in the book how his Bush colleagues at DOJ headquarters transformed DOJ's Voting Litigation Section: While the emphasis had formerly been on safeguarding the franchise for disadvantaged citizens of every description, the new emphasis was on using federal power to expunge from the rolls those who, for whatever reason, were judged not to belong there.

Iglesias noted that Graves, another 2001 Bush appointee, was replaced by Bradley Schlozman, "a DOJ attorney who had made a name for himself by digging up convenient voter fraud cases, real or imagined." Schlozman had led the transformation of DOJ's Voting Litigation Section.

As part of the U.S. attorney purge, Schlozman replaced Graves in March 2006 to announce voting fraud indictments against ACORN (The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now). Five days before the 2006 elections, just in time so that news reports would damage Democrats, Schlozman announced indictments against four former ACORN workers. They had earned $8 an hour to sign up voters in poor neighborhoods. The workers had been turned in by ACORN itself, and so it was an easy prosecution.

Congress cut off any federal funding for ACORN's varied community programs, in part because an embezzlement by its founder, and the organization dissolved in 2010.

The Obama administration's view has been, for the most part, to avoid finger-pointing. Our Project has gone further and called the DOJ's final report last summer on the U.S. attorney firing a whitewash.

We reported that the investigator was herself compromised by a court-finding of misconduct, and that she focused almost exclusively on the Iglesias firing. She failed to call key witnesses involving the other 92 U.S. attorneys offices, such as Schlozman, who approached with their job of identifying crime targets with a partisan, "loyal Bushies" outlook.

The Obama response of closing ranks with Bush predecessors thus illustrates the president's "look forward not backward" policy he announced in January 2009 regarding suspected Bush administration wrongdoing.

Also, Republicans and their media outlets have muddied the waters on election fraud issues by criticizing the DOJ for not taking stronger actions against two Philadelphia members of the New Black Panther Party (a Nation of Islam offshoot), one of whom is alleged to have menaced voters by carrying a police-type billy club outside a polling site in 2008.

Looking Ahead

Readers here can judge how that situation compares with the fears of the Republican IT consultant Spoonamore regarding the 2000 and 2004 elections. and the prospects that the same kind of problems still exist, with scant scrutiny by the news media.

Fitrakis, the plaintiffs co-counsel, summarized in an article July 20 for the Free Press advocacy news site he edits Spoonamore's testimony and significant new evidence. That evidence included the contract signed between then-Ohio Secretary of State Blackwell and Connell's company, plus a graphic architectural map of the Secretary of State's election-night server layout system.

In response to a question of whether SmarTech had the capability to "input data" and thus alter the results of Ohio's 2004 election. Spoonamore responded: "Yes. They would have had data input capacities. The system might have been set up to log which source generated the data but probably did not."

"Until now," Fitrakis wrote, "the architectural maps and contracts from the Ohio 2004 election were never made public, which may indicate that the entire system was designed for fraud."

In a previous affidavit to the court, Spoonamore swore: "The architecture further confirms how this election was stolen. The computer system and SmarTech had the correct placement, connectivity, and computer experts necessary to change the election in any manner desired by the controllers of the SmarTech computers."

Craig Unger is the author of the 2004 best-seller House of Bush, House of Saud that provided core research for Michael Moore's film, Fahrenheit 9/11, the world's top-grossing documentary of all-time. Unger has been working for months on an investigative article about SmarTech and the 2004 election for Vanity Fair.

But major publications do not always publish assignments, even by successful authors. Defenders of the status quo made a major and almost-successful effort, for example, to suppress Fahrenheit.

Government, Police, Judges more dishonest than honest

Supreme Court justices appointed George W. Bush to US President, he wasn't elected. I, personally, believe that Bush's people fixed the election in 2000 and 2004. That is why I accompanied Vincent Bugliosi, the Charles Manson prosecutor, to serve the Vermont Attorney General with why Bush should be prosecuted for murder in Vermont.

Have talked with military veterans and their families. Planes no longer shoot out flares to confuse missiles. They may, as an absolute last resort, but military planes have pods that send electronic interference to the missile. It is a smaller version than is on military/CIA satellites that are part of the Ronald Reagan Star Wars program. The weakest link in an aircraft is the pilot. In a downward turning, or downward maneuver, the pilot's sight and hearing can be taken out with a weak neural-transmitter signal and paralysis, blacking out, or even death can be caused by certain concentrated frequencies. It is supposed to be classified that so many Iraqi, Libyan, and other military jets have not been taken out by missiles over the years, but have been by a pod-like device under US aircraft emitting concentrated microwave, radio, or other type radiation to take out the pilot, not the aircraft initially. Since the mid 1980's pilots allegedly have been able to smoke a jack rabbit on a runway at about a half mile away sitting in the cockpit using a joystick controlling the pod. Jack rabbits are a pile of smoking bones, no fur, right on, or beside the runway, instantly.

Maybe a similar device can be used from outside the airport on the plane, shutting the politician off to be unable to fly. No real cost, no need to breach the airfield fence. The device could appear to be just a large GPS cone as are on delivery trucks and 18 wheelers. The targeting can be done from a laptop, anywhere.

The US, as a sovereign nation, has been plundered from within, and the US Constitution has been used as toilet paper by US Presidents such as Dick Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, George W. Police in the US are armed revenue collectors, they're guards of the state and government, and they have no obligation to enforce laws, protect and serve you, arrest criminals, and to take your complaints. Police voluntarily, at their discretion, enforce laws for the people, not the state. Maybe 99% of their duties are for revenue collection, and protecting the interests of those in government, and maybe 1% actual protection and service for the people.

I was stalked for well over 2 years by a Connecticut State Police Informant who I broke up with when I found out what she was about. Went into Massachusetts, rented cars, and didn't talk about where I was going over the phone or in email. Nevertheless, she seemed to show up wherever I had a date or was out socializing. Connecticut State Police Officers would recite word for word my emails and phone conversations. It is scary when a police force can enforce a "no dating" policy on a citizen who refuses intimate contact with a member of the goon squad.

Divorced fathers meeting at a Connecticut law library to research laws to deal with judicial corruption and misconduct were also cyber stalked and probably tracked with cell phones. If you make a police misconduct complaint in Connecticut, it is to the next higher officer. A good way to get arrested and railroaded to prison is to complain about a judge and/or police officer. The system is out to protect itself from us, not to protect and serve. Those who want value for our tax dollar and ask for it are in danger. We need to keep an eye on them, much more than they need to keep an eye on us.

ACLU's New Project to Uncover Details on Law Enforcement Use of Location Tracking

The ACLU has launched a massive effort with more than thirty of its state affiliates to uncover just how law enforcement agencies, large and small, are using cell phone location data to track Americans. The national organization and its affiliates submitted 379 requests through state Freedom of Information (FOI) laws and hope to unearth documentary evidence to show just how law enforcement is using new technology to invade Americans' privacy.

"We want to get a better handle on the scope of location tracking in this country, how often it happens, where it's happening, whether or not the government gets a warrant based on probable cause," says Catherine Crump, a staff attoreney for the ACLU's Speech, Privacy and Technology Project. She believes this effort will demonstrate law enforcement is using technology tracking more and more often for cases.

Through the FOI requests, the ACLU seeks to uncover information on: "whether law enforcement agents demonstrate probable cause and obtain a warrant to access cell phone location data; statistics on how frequently law enforcement agencies obtain cell phone location data and how much money law enforcement agencies spend tracking cell phones and other policies and procedures used for acquiring location data."

The ACLU takes a clear stance on location tracking, according to Crump. They "think location tracking is deeply invasive of people's privacy rights and the government should only be allowed to do it when they have a warrant based on probable cause." But, it is clear "that's not what's happening. We think that violates the Constitution."

"The American public should know the extent to which people are getting tracked without getting a warrant," Crump declares.

She notes how much location tracking has been in the news recently. Not a week goes buy, she says, that we don't read about a new development related to location tracking. For example, the Supreme Court is "poised to address the issue of whether or not the Fourth Amendment requires the government to attach GPS devices." I haven't been called "Daddy" by my daughter since being railroaded to prison just before Halloween 2002 for exposing the growing Police State pre-9-11. I may never see, or hold, my own grandchildren. Will not know if my daughter is married, to give her away. She told me, that she didn't want me in, and out of her life, after I was released from prison. May never see over half my family again. Instead of being invited to family reunions, as I was pre-prison, I am told that I am not to show up. I lost my furniture, appliances, tools, and the sum total of my life upon entry to prison for resisting being mugged by a police informant on my own property having used pepper spray to end the beating I was taking. I worked for over 2 decades and had invested in a home and my retirement. All lost, and I've broken no laws. Instead of buying new cars, spending money as a consumer, paying taxes, you the taxpayer paid to take me off the taxpayer list to be held as a political prisoner. Free Speech and choosing to be self-employed in America truly has a price.

I am requesting that you, or your staff, write a letter to Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy asking that my criminal record be expunged. I was threatened with arrest, losing my property, my daughter being estranged from me, losing my contracting business, and going to prison after contacting US Senator Chris Dodd, Governor John G. Rowland, State Senators Tony Guglielmo and John A. Kissel about police aiding prostitutes and drug dealers, not small business and landlords. I was being terrorized by Connecticut State Police, and their informants, before my false arrest after police had refused to protect and serve me, and then arrested me when I was forced to defend myself against a police informant attacking me from behind on my property. I was being threatened with arrest, and prison by police before my false arrest, if I didn't leave the State and stop expressing my opinions. Will you please write a letter for me asking that my record be expunged, and get back to me?

I was told I could either get a Civic Award for improving the quality of life for Stafford Springs, Connecticut downtown citizens or lose my daughter, home, rental properties, contracting business built over 2 decades if I did not continue dating Barbara Sattal, an alleged Connecticut State Police Informant allegedly offered $10,000 to set me up for a DUI arrest where police could plant drugs on me, beat me up, where I would face 5 to 15 years in prison. I didn't know she was married, left her husband for me, when she confessed. The reason given for me to be a target on the Connecticut State Police Secret Enemies Arrest on Sight List was that I had pissed off the former Connecticut State Police Commissioner, and former judge, Arthur L. Spada. The police liaison to legislative officials said the police union was going to retaliate for my having proposed Civilian Oversight of Police to legislators and for my being critical of police and the court system in letters to the editor printed in newspapers.

For free speech and for pursuing the American Dream, paying taxes, owning a home, fixing up boarded up rental properties, raising a family, I should not have been a target for prison, police harassment using prostitutes, drug dealers, and criminals to get the job done. For all my honest hard work, I should not have ended up almost freezing to death, homeless in the woods of Vermont, hiding from the Connecticut State Police terrorism. The official terrorism and abuse continues. I have found out from judicial branch insiders that the court system is rigged, so justice can't be had in courts.

I feel I should be compensated for my loss, be able to have a clean record, be able to change my name, and to remove all content from my blogs after letting readers know that I was moving on with my life.

After making this video all of my content on freespeech.com was removed. Their servers in the Atlanta Georgia area kept frying after power surges where neighbors were unaffected. All laptops and desktops friend at a friends house in Stonington Connecticut fried at the same moment. A friend in Ellington Connecticut who has made a Connecticut State Police misconduct complaint and complained about a judge had all electronics, computers, televisions, and his furnace blown in a power surge and his neighbors were unaffected. During the same weeks, a power surge occurred at the Wales, Mass horse farm I was staying at.

During the same week I was brought to my knees inside a house, Pawtucket Connecticut, with intense burning that lasted for about 3 minutes in 10 second bursts. I had surface burns all over my body. I left Connecticut and went into hiding.

This is my beef.

Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) Technology-- A Threat To The US Or Not?

In response to a recent article I published about a country music singer, the late, great Dave Dudley, and the USA's FUBAR military mission, one of the OpEdNews readers, Mr. Timothy Gatto, posted this, which I take as interesting but tangential good counsel:

"Wait a minute. All a nation has to do to send us back to around say 1850 is to shoot a few EMP nukes over the US. It would shut our grid down for years. These are the threats they should be looking at instead of the false crap they throw at us on a daily basis."

I have been aware of EMP technology since a book appeared in 1995 describing the HAARP (High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program) Project, which was conducted in the wilds of Alaska. That book is Angels Don't Play This HAARP (Manning, Jeane, and Begich, Dr. Nicholas; Earthpulse Press, Anchorage, 1995).

Manning and Begich introduce the technology, of which the roots were certan experiments by the great and suppressed inventor Nikola Tesla, near the end of the 19th century. In 1940, old man Tesla (52 years after his crucial invention of alternating current) announced the invention of a "death ray." (P. 1-2)

Tesla, of course, was suppressed, and Thomas Alva Edison got most of the credit, and most of the money, for the inventions upon which modern electrical power are based.

The researchers learned that "HAARP represents a technology which could lead to a new class of weapons that could change our world profoundly-- an all-purpose military tool. If misused, the tool could mess up the weather. It could be used against humanity in a way that would change the way people think, believe and feel. It could be used for good or evil, just the way a harp can produce the music of Mozart or the melody of a death march..."

"...(EMP technology) can: manipulate global weather; hurt ecosystems; knock out electronic communications (its primary use as a military weapon); and change our moods and mental states." (Angels Don't Play This HAARP, P. 9)

Having read this back then, I have been waiting for OUR government to use EMP on some other country. Unfortunately for such warmongers, as the authors of Angels note, there is no way (or there was not, as far as they were able to find out, in 1995) to reliably unleash this technology on a country or its military force such that the effects do not also affect the attacker. If you blast the ionosphere with this incredible power, it's just as likely to knock out the WHOLE WORLD's electricity as it is to just stop America's grid from operation.

It is a sign of how fast the rate of increase of technological innovation is increasing (increase of rate of increase, graphed, is called logarithmic, and the graph is a hyperbola, where the x axis represents linear time, and the Y axis represents the present, which is always receding at a linear rate into the future. The hyperbola, representing increase of rate of increase, climbs, infinitely, and gets closer and closer to the y axis, but never touches it. That's the way hyperbolas work.

In their conclusion (P. 204-206), Begich and Manning tick off various technologies now fully, ubiquitously in use (GPS for one). The corporations E-Systems and its controller, Raytheon, were, in 1995, the OWNERS of the HAARP patents.

Even the military (at least the military during the Clinton Administration) understood, though, that they were playing with fire, or worse.

The concept, "revolution in military affairs" (RMA) first emergd in a document issued by the US Army War College in July 1994: The Revolution In Military Affairs. This document said a philosophy of "conflict short of war" ("terrorism, insurgency or violence associated with narcotrafficking") requires new weapons and a change in public opinion. It asserts that this change in public opinion does not have to evolve naturally, but can be deliberately shaped by the government. The idea is that belief systems of Americans can be slowly altered to allow the military to introduce new weapons technology which would, at this time, be resisted by most Americans. (P. 202)

However, in another section of the same document, the authors urge (perhaps disingenuously) caution:

"Even with all the constraints and countermeasures, there is some value in applying emerging technology using existing strategy, doctrine, organization, force structure, objectives, concepts, attitudes and norms. But there is another alternative: we could deliberately engineer a comprehensive revolution, seeking utter transformation (of warmaking) rather than simply an expeditious use of new technology. However alluring, such a program is rife with hidden dangers and unintended consequences. Unlike the Manhattan Project, we are not forced to pursue revolution without considering the implications (IS THAT A DAMNING STATEMENT OR WHAT? THEY WENT AHEAD WITHOUT CONSIDERING IMPLICATIONS, JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE MIGHT DROP A "FAT MAN" FIRST??). In conflict short of war, RMA is a Pandora's Box desperately in need of careful scrutiny before opening." (P. 205)

This book is now 16 years old. I have not kept current (it is probably impossible to do so, since certainly the cutting edge of this technology is held in top secrecy) on the latest wrinkle in EMP technology, and by now, certainly, any nation that is our adversary with the capability to actually make a successful missile attack on the US (and there are only three such nations-- China, Russia and Israel) certainly possesses all the information described or alluded to in this book.

But I am not in the least scared of foreign domination. It's our own rulers, Timothy, who are out of control, have a military budget as large as the rest of the world combined, who have shown that they are a clear and present danger to the security of the world. You are correct that what they are throwing at us is "false crap" designed to TERRORIZE US. The bugbear-touting of the Bush and Obama Administrations is all part and parcel of the RMA of 1994, the central tenet of which is not the new technologies themselves, BUT THE BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATION OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO ACCEPT THOSE TECHNOLOGIES.

If anybody uses EMP tech, with its "unintended consequences", Timothy, it's going to be US. [source]
